Integrative Production Technology for High-Wage Countries
Industrial production in high-wage countries like Germany is still at risk. Yet, there are many counter-examples in which producing companies dominate their competitors by not only compensating for their specific disadvantages in terms of factor costs (e.g. wages, energy, duties and taxes) but rather by minimising waste using synchronising integrativity as well as by obtaining superior adaptivity on alternating conditions. In order to respond to the issue of economic sustainability of industrial production in high-wage countries, the leading production engineering and material research scientists of RWTH Aachen University together with renowned companies have established the Cluster of Excellence “Integrative Production Technology for High-Wage Countries”. This compendium comprises the cluster’s scientific results as well as a selection of business and technology cases, in which these results have been successfully implemented into industrial practice in close cooperation with more than 30 companies of the industrial production sector.
Integrative Computational Materials Engineering
Presenting the results of an ambitious project, this book summarizes the efforts towards an open, web-based modular and extendable simulation platform for materials engineering that allows simulations bridging several length scales. In so doing, it covers processes along the entire value chain and even describes such different classes of materials as metallic alloys and polymers. It comprehensively describes all structural ideas, the underlying concepts, standard specifications, the verification results obtained for different test cases and additionally how to utilize the platform as a user and how to join it as a provider. A resource for researchers, users and simulation software providers alike, the monograph provides an overview of the current status, serves as a generic manual for prospective users, and offers insights into the inner modular structure of the simulation platform.
Experimental Analysis of Nano and Engineering Materials and Structures
This volume contains two-page abstracts of the 482 papers presented at the latest conference on the subject, in Alexandroupolis, Greece. The accompanying CD contains the full length papers. The abstracts of the fifteen plenary lectures are included at the beginning of the book. The remaining 467 abstracts are arranged in 23 tracks and 28 special symposia/sessions with 225 and 242 abstracts, respectively. The papers of the tracks have been contributed from open call, while the papers of the symposia/sessions have been solicited by the respective organizers.
Sandwich Structures 7: Advancing with Sandwich Structures and Materials
Sandwich structures represent a special form of a laminated composite material or structural elements, where a relatively thick, lightweight and compliant core material separates thin stiff and strong face sheets. The faces are usually made of laminated polymeric based composite materials, and typically, the core can be a honeycomb type material, a polymeric foam or balsa wood. The faces and the core are joined by adhesive bonding, which ensures the load transfer between the sandwich constituent parts. The result is a special laminate with very high bending stiffness and strength to weight ratios. Sandwich structures are being used successfully for a variety of applications such as spacecraft, aircraft, train and car structures, wind turbine blades, boat/ship superstructures, boat/ship hulls and many others. The overall objective of the 7th International Conference on Sandwich Structures (ICSS-7) is to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of the latest research and technology on all aspects of sandwich structures and materials, spanning the entire spectrum of research to applications in all the fields listed above.
Fundamentals for the Dimensioning and Optimization of Prestressed Segmented Girders for Application in Bridge Crane Systems
Bridge cranes are widely used as discontinuous material handling systems in industrial environments. The so-called crane bridge plays a central role in the overall construction. With increasing span widths and load capacities, the dimensions of the crane bridge also increase. The core of this work is the design and optimization of a new type of bridge crane system, which consists of individual segments and is eccentrically pretensioned by a tensile member.
English as an Academic Language in Europe
This book deals with the spread of English as an academic language in Europe and in particular its use as a language of teaching. First, it depicts the historical development of the rise of English in academia in the course of the 20th century. Then it focuses on its more recently acquired function as an additional language of teaching at university level.
