Our Precious Bond

Identical twin sisters, right from early childhood, have to face complex situations that threaten to sever their tight bond. Nonetheless, by stark determination and by supporting each other in quite unconventional ways, Venice becomes a defense lawyer and Geneva an emergency room doctor. However, secret loves, depression, alcoholism, and schizophrenia lurk sinisterly, threatening to beat them down. This book is their story. It has many great joyful moments and many excruciatingly painful and sad ones. But overall, it is a triumph of love. The book does not sensationalize mental illness. It makes a great effort to bring awareness, authentically, to the disease and how it affects the person, their families (and other loved ones), and the community.

In this warm and engaging sequel to Our Precious Bond, accomplished author Marlene F. Cheng closely follows the life stories of three characters who are as unique as their names: Raven, Oriole and Tree. Raven is the now-grown son of Geneva, from the first book, and his NHL hockey star father, known only as "Y." He turns one day from a PhD path and impulsively joins the Canadian army, eventually becoming a superior sniper. And even though his parents are nonplussed at his new life choice, he never looks back through two harrowing tours of duty in Iraq. Oriole is a downtrodden refugee camp survivor who miraculously emigrates to America one day, sponsored by, of all organizations, a college fra...

THE TUAREG LADIES

Tess has Multiple-Personality Disorder. Struggling to meet the demands of her professional life while desperately trying to keep her personal life private, she becomes introverted and friendless. She feels her alters “switching” and the unraveling of her mental being, viscerally. Her tenuous hope for recovery is as fragile as her emotions. “Shattering” is her constant fear. Marlene writes with great facility. Her writing is intelligent; her prose is poetic. In my practice, I’ve treated patients with Multiple-Personality Disorder. It would be unprofessional of me to give a definitive diagnosis without interviewing Tess and the “alters.” However, there is no doubt that Tess has dissociative episodes. To survive the horrific traumas of childhood, she would have had to develop an escape mechanism, and dissociating was; probably, the only way. Dr. David Yeung MBBS, FRCPC.
