Devátý případ inspektorky Malin Forsové. Předtucha přivede Malin Forsovou do Rydského lesa. Časné zářijové ráno je zatím stále zahaleno tmou. Z průmyslové oblasti na okraji města Linköpingu se až sem šíří kouřová mračna z obrovského požáru. Jenomže pach spáleniny nepřichází pouze z továrny. Na zemi před ní leží ohořelé tělo jakési ženy. Den předtím byl v kontejneru na odpadky nalezen mrtvý devítiletý chlapec. Zavražděný. Pocházel z neúplné rodiny, žil s osamělou matkou alkoholičkou a po nocích se často toulal. Ale kdo ho mohl chtít zabít? Malin tuší, že obě vraždy spolu souvisejí. Společně s kolegy se těžce dopátrávají stop, které je posléze dovedou do vzdálených zemí, z nichž se rekrutují současní otroci, lidé bez práva na šťastný život.
