A Godsend to His People

Marshall Keeble (1878-1968) stands as one of the Church of Christ's most influential and celebrated African American evangelists. His impact was felt throughout the South and well beyond as he helped establish over two hundred churches and baptized approximately forty thousand individuals during his nearly seventy years of ministry. His charismatic and dynamic speaking style earned him a devoted following. Despite his impact on the religious culture of the South, there has been scant information available about this extraordinary individual-until now. With the his new book, A Godsend to His People, Edward J. Robinson brings to light over forty years of Keeble's writings. This collection show...

From Mule Back to Super Jet with the Gospel

Originally published in 1962, this is the fascinating account of Brother Marshall Keeble’s missionary journey to Africa with Brother Lucien Palmer in 1960, including a visit to the Holy Land, Palestine. “This was Brother Keeble’s greatest missionary journey for the Lord, and he has made many journeys. On this trip he preached with great power. His influence was felt and it will live on in Africa, as he now has sons and daughters in the Gospel in that far away land, and through them the work of our Lord will continue.[...] “With great joy the experiences had by Brother Keeble on this journey have been written, and he hopes you will find much pleasure in this narrative. May it cause you to have a great increase of faith to use the jet age to God’s glory in advancing his kingdom in every nation of the world.”—Lucien Palmer, Preface

A Distinct People

...The result of over a decade of research.... This is a groundbreaking study that will be a jumping off point for work on Churches of Christ for many years to come. Dr. Douglas A. Foster, Assistant Professor of Church History, Abilene Christian University ...An important book, carefully researched and written, and badly needed by our brotherhood.... I am delighted that it is now available to everyone concerned about our past or our future. Dr. Bill Humble, Director, Center for Restoration Studies Abilene Christian University Few people are as well-read in American Church History as Hooper.... His insights into personalities and issues come from careful research. Some will shock traditionalists, others will annoy revisionists, and all will engage serious students. Dr. Rubel Shelly, Minister, Woodmont Hills Church of Christ ...A quick-paced and engaging narrative.... In its pages the reader comes to know the giants who have shaped our fellowship. I would recommend this book to all members of the church who want to understand where we are and where we are going. Gregory A. Tidwell, Minister

The Encyclopedia of the Stone-Campbell Movement

"Over ten years in the making, The Encyclopedia of the Stone-Campbell Movement offers for the first time a sweeping historical and theological treatment of this complex, vibrant global communion. Written by more than 300 contributors, this major reference work contains over 700 original articles covering all of the significant individuals, events, places, and theological tenets that have shaped the Movement. Much more than simply a historical dictionary, this volume also constitutes an interpretive work reflecting historical consensus among Stone-Campbell scholars, even as it attempts to present a fair, representative picture of the rich heritage that is the Stone-Campbell Movement."--BOOK JACKET.

Marshall Keeble was a remarkable preacher of the gospel. his story is one we need not forget. Born in 1878 to slave parents, Keeble never attended college. Yet he became well educated in the Scriptures and preached the gospel around the world-- dance halls, tobacco warehouses, log cabins, lumber sheds, brush arbors, the bush country of Africa, and palatial air-conditioned municipal auditoriums. Perhaps the best-known member of the church of Christ from the 1930s to the 1960s, Keeble transcended racial boundaries in a way few others have been able to do. He baptized more than 50,000 people before he died in 1968. This is Keeble's incredible story.

Encyclopedia of Religion in the South

The publication of the Encyclopedia of Religion in the South in 1984 signaled the rise in the scholarly interest in the study of Religion in the South. Religion has always been part of the cultural heritage of that region, but scholarly investigation had been sporadic. Since the original publication of the ERS, however, the South has changed significantly in that Christianity is no longer the primary religion observed. Other religions like Judaism, Buddhism, and Hinduism have begun to have very important voices in Southern life. This one-volume reference, the only one of its kind, takes this expansion into consideration by updating older relevant articles and by adding new ones. After more t...
