Der umfangreiche biographische Teil widmet sich den Schicksalen der 133 jüdischen Einwohner, die entweder deportiert und ermordet oder in die Emigration getrieben wurden. Ihm liegen umfangreiche Recherchen in staatlichen, kommunalen und privaten Archiven im In- und Ausland sowie zahlreiche Kontakte mit Spezialisten und Zeitzeugen zugrunde. Das Gedenkbuch – bisher die einzige Publikation über Werder während des Nationalsozialismus – leistet damit einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Erinnerungskultur der Stadt und ist gleichzeitig ein beispielhafter Beitrag zur Holocaustforschung auf lokaler Ebene.
