The Whirligig of Time
Zdenek Stribrny, an internationally respected Shakespeare scholar, was Professor of English and American Studies at Charles University, Prague, until the Russian occupation of 1968. He was reinstated after the Velvet Revolution of 1989. This volume, prefaced by a new autobiographical introduction, collects papers on Shakespeare, most of which were written originally in English, from various periods of his eventful career. Their two main themes are the role of Time and the Czech critical and theatrical response to Shakespeare, with special emphasis on the various ways in which, during an era of censorship, productions offered coded political readings of the plays. Zdenek Stribrny is Professor Emeritus of English and American Studies at Charles University, Prague. Lois Potter is Ned B. Allen Professor of English at the University of Delaware.

Selected contributions to the Ninth World Shakespeare Congress, which took place in July 2011 in Prague, represent the contemporary state of Shakespeare studies in thirty-eight countries worldwide. Lectures on American literature
The first edition of this book, published in 2002, aimed to complete the study material for our students of American literature. The third edition strives to emphasize this aspect while expanding and deepening the general overview as well as including other important movements and authors. The exposition of the 20th century underwent major changes: the scholars added new texts while supplementing the older ones to comply with the development of critical and academic approaches. Islam, Christianity and the Making of Czech Identity, 1453-1683
Unlike many narratives about the Czech lands, which place them on the periphery of their own history, this study considers Czechs as central characters, looking both east and west to find their place in the early modern world. Islam, Christianity and the Making of Czech Identity, 1453-1683 works through the descriptive and ethnographic texts produced by Czech speakers about Islam and the Ottoman Empire to show how they used this discourse to create Czech identities. Rather than simply constructing identity in opposition to the Islamic Other, Laura Lisy-Wagner shows how these authors played the Holy Roman and Ottoman Empires off each other, creating an autonomous space for themselves in between. Lisy-Wagner introduces sources that are new to English-language historiography and uses them in a way that is new to Czech historiography as well. The chapters are organized based on different categories of agents-travelers, ethnographers, religious leaders, artists, and political revolutionaries-whose voices cast ideas of Europe and Czech identity in the early modern period in a new and different light.
