Scaffolded Language Emergence in the Classroom
This book introduces an approach to elementary adult foreign language learning that is based on theory (in particular, complexity thinking and social constructivism) on the one hand, and years of practice using various unconventional methods on the other. A key assumption of the Scaffolded Language Emergence (SLE) approach is that a language need not be taught or learned in the conventional sense of these terms. Instead, it is argued, language can ‘emerge’, that is generate and maintain itself through authentic use. The study and application of rules is considered most useful in later stages of learning, while intuition and abductive thinking can be used very effectively to initiate or bootstrap naturalistic learning processes – even in adults learning a foreign language.
Contrastive Phraseology
This volume is addressed to researchers in the field of phraseology, and to teachers, translators and lexicographers. It is a collection of essays offering a comprehensive, modern analysis of phrasemes, embracing a wide range of subjects and themes, from linguistic, both applied and theoretical, to cultural aspects. The contrastive approach underlying this variety of themes allows the divergences and analogies between phraseological units in two or more languages to be outlined. The languages compared here are both major and minor, European and non-European, and the text includes contrastive analyses of the most commonly investigated languages (French-German, English-Spanish, Russian-German), as well as some less frequently investigated languages (like Ukrainian, Romanian, Georgian and Thai), which are not as well-represented in phraseological description, despite their scientific interest.
Sprachmittlung – Mediation – Mediazione linguistica
Der Begriff Sprachmittlung ist zu einem schillernden Modewort der Fremdsprachendidaktik geworden, der im europäischen Kontext und für verschiedene Fremdsprachen unterschiedlich interpretiert wird. Vor allem die terminologische Beziehung von Sprachmittlung und Übersetzen und Dolmetschen, ihre Abgrenzung und die daraus resultierenden Inhalte und Methoden haben eine fachwissenschaftliche Diskussion entfacht. Verstärkt ist auch eine konstruktive Auseinandersetzung mit verwandten Disziplinen wie Interkomprehension, Kulturwissenschaften, Neurolinguistik, Korpus- und Textlinguistik oder Lexikographie zu beobachten. Die Unterschiede in Terminologie und Interpretation des Begriffs Sprachmittlung lieferten den Anstoß für diesen Band, der den deutsch-italienischen Dialog zum Thema Sprach- und Kulturmittlung fördert und einen Austausch zu den verschiedenen Konzeptionen und didaktischen Umsetzungen an Schulen und Universitäten in Deutschland und Italien anregt.
L’uso del dizionario nell’insegnamento delle lingue straniere
Anche se i dizionari e enciclopedie sono cambiati in termini di struttura, aspetto e medium – soprattutto per via della globalizzazione e della digitalizzazione – le opere lessicografiche di consultazione dovrebbero sempre costituire uno strumento centrale e fondamentale non solo per la traduzione e per l’apprendimento di una lingua straniera. (Consiglio d’Europa 2001, 2018) Grazie alla nascita di un nuovo ambito di ricerca all’interno della metalessicografia, la ricerca sull’uso del dizionario, negli ultimi decenni, sono apparsi studi empirici sull’attuale uso delle risorse lessicografiche nell’insegnamento delle lingue straniere. Nella presente pubblicazione, la ricerca sull’uso del dizionario, con le sue questioni metodologiche, viene ampliamente trattata per la prima volta in lingua italiana. Inoltre, si presenta una overview degli studi empirici in cui l’utente è l’apprendente di lingue straniere. Alla fine sono descritti, più in dettaglio, studi empirici, condotti dall’autrice nell’ambito del Tedesco come lingua straniera.
Dictionary Use and Dictionary Teaching
Foreign language learners often use electronic dictionaries or other information from the Internet to solve language problems. However, they seem to have great difficulty using dictionaries and online resources appropriately, profitably and successfully. Their teachers also seem unfamiliar with the current dictionary landscape and sometimes insist on using a single (monolingual) print dictionary in class. Sprachmittlung und Mediation für Deutsch als Fremd- und Zweitsprache (DaF/DaZ)
Sprachmittlung und Mediation sind für erfolgreiches Sprachenlernen elementar und längst Teil unserer zunehmend mehrsprachigen und multikulturellen Lebenswirklichkeit. Seit 2001 ist die Sprachmittlung fester Bestandteil des Gemeinsamen Europäischen Referenzrahmens für Sprachen (GeR). Im aktuellen Begleitband zum GeR wird die Mediation erneut stark aufgewertet. Beide haben ihren festen Platz in der bundesdeutschen Fremdsprachendidaktik, in der DaF-/DaZ-Didaktik leider noch nicht. Das ändern Martina Nied Curcio und Peggy Katelhön. Neben einer ausführlichen theoretischen Erörterung – auch in Abgrenzung zur Übersetzung – erarbeiten sie Sprachmittlung und Mediation auch didaktisch-methodologisch. Sie diskutieren u. a. Intra- und Interlingualität, Kulturmittlung und (Inter-)Kulturalität, Handlungsorientierung, Sprachlernprozess, Sprachreflexion und Sprach(-lern-)bewusstheit, Medienkompetenz, Strategien, Textlinguistik, Mehrsprachigkeit, Berufsbezogenheit und CLIL. All diese Themen werden durch zahlreiche konkrete Anwendungsbeispiele veranschaulicht.
