The War on Civil Liberties

Examining the legal foundations of the war on terror, this book investigates the loss of the civil liberties of American citizens and legal immigrants. In a detailed look at bills such as the 1996 Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act, the USA Patriot Act, and the Homeland Security Act, and executive orders, it provides a comprehensive picture of the war on terror and explores the claimed victories by the Bush administration. Chronicling the major battles with Muslim charities, immigrants, lawyers, and "enemy combatants," this exposé reveals how the values and freedoms of all Americans are at risk or have already been destroyed. Also surveyed is the growing grassroots dissent by groups such as the ACLU and the resistance movement against the policies and major figures of the Bush administration.

Opening the Road

During a time when taking a trip across the nation could be dangerous for Black Americans, one man crafted a guide that changed the lives of millions. In the late 1930s when segregation was legal and Black Americans couldn't visit every establishment or travel everywhere they wanted to safely, a New Yorker named Victor Hugo Green decided to do something about it. Green wrote and published a guide that listed places where his fellow Black Americans could be safe in New York City. The guide sold like hot cakes! Soon customers started asking Green to make a guide to help them travel and vacation safely across the nation too. With the help of his mail carrier co-workers and the African American business community, Green's guide allowed millions of African Americans to travel safely and enjoy traveling across the nation. In the first picture book about the creation and distribution of The Green Book, author Keila Dawson and illustrator Alleanna Harris tell the story of the man behind it and how this travel guide opened the road for a safer, more equitable America.

"A new edition of the classic work on the island's Old Norse place-name heritage. It is now over 50 years since Magne Oftedal's classic article on 'The Village Names of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides' was published in Norsk Tidsskrift for Sprogvidenskap, Volume 17 (Oslo, 1954). It was an important by-product of research carried out by Oftedal into the Gaelic dialect of the Leurbost district of Lewis (published in 1956), where he lived from 1950 to 1951. This booklet consists of a facsimile copy of the original article, together with the most interesting map which accompanied it."--Publisher's description.
