The Central Amazon Floodplain
Floodplains are ecosystems which are driven by periodic inundation and oscillation between terrestrial and aquatic phases. An understanding of such pulsing systems is only possible by studying both phases and linking the results into an integrated overview. This book presents the results of a 15-year study of the structure and function of one of the largest tropical floodplains, the Amazon River floodplain. It covers qualitative aspects, e.g., adaptations of aquatic and terrestrial organisms to the flood pulse as well as quantitative aspects, e.g., studies of biomass, primary production, decomposition, and nutrient cycles. The authors interpret their findings and the most important data from other studies under an integrating scientific concept, the Flood Pulse Concept.

Lipid Metabolism
Lipid Metabolism focuses on the regulation and metabolism of lipids. This book is composed of 10 chapters that specifically deal with fatty acids, prostaglandins, glycerides, glycerophosphates, cholesterol, isoprenoids, and aromatic compounds. This text starts with an overview of fatty acid metabolism and its controlling factors. This topic is followed by discussions on the physiochemical aspects of oxidative metabolism of fatty acids, with a special emphasis on the role of carnitine in this process. A chapter highlights the several important aspects of higher plant lipid metabolism. Other chapters are devoted to the structures, biosynthesis, and metabolism of prostaglandins, bacterial lipids, phospholipids, glycerides, and steroids. Restructuring land allocation, water use and agricultural value chains
Central Asia underwent an agricultural transformation in the 20th century that was neither efficient nor sustainable. There is a need for innovations that will remedy these deficits by reversing environmental degradation and ensuring poverty alleviation. This book provides science-based findings and recommendations for restructuring land and water use and agricultural value chains to enable ecologically and economically sound practices that increase resource use efficiency, rehabilitate ecosystem functions, and enhance rural incomes. Innovations were designed in concert with stakeholders. The prospective benefits are shown for the Khorezm region, part of the lower Amudarya region, Uzbekistan, but the findings can be extrapolated to regions facing similar agro-ecological challenges.
