Life of Martyn Lloyd-Jones-1899-1981

This book is a re-cast, condensed and, in parts, re-written version of the author's two volumes D. Martyn Lloyd- Jones: The First Forty Years (I982) and The Fight of Faith (I990). Since those dates, the life of Dr Lloyd-Jones has been the subject of comment and assessment in many publications and these have been taken into account. The main purpose of this further biography, however, is to put Dr Lloyd-Jones' life before another generation in more accessible form. The big story is all here.

Martyn Lloyd-Jones is widely considered one of the greatest preachers of the 20th century, but few modern Christians know much about his remarkable life and long-standing ministry at London’s historic Westminster Chapel. In this new biography, Christopher Catherwood—Lloyd-Jones’s eldest grandson—introduces a new generation of Christians to the physician-turned-preacher’s important legacy. Organized thematically, this engaging study highlights “the Doctor’s” constant emphasis on the centrality of the Bible when discussing theology or the Christian life, showing how he integrated his belief and practice in the context of a quickly changing world.

In every era the church needs revival—certainly today as much as ever. And in the heart of every committed Christian there is the longing for personal revival—to know the quality and depths of spiritual reality, and the presence of God in one's personal life. This was the deepest desire of Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, one of the great 20th-century Bible expositors. It was also the purpose behind this series of messages which were first given on the 100th anniversary of the Great Revival which started in Wales, and swept across England and throughout the United States and to the far corners of the world. As Dr. Lloyd-Jones recognized, it is a rare time in the history of the church when there i...

Studies in the Sermon on the Mount

A spiritual classic, this detailed and comprehensive study by one of the greatest expository preachers of our time explains Christ's teaching in the Sermon on the Mount and incisively applies it to the Christian life. With characteristic vigor and emotional vitality Dr. Lloyd-Jones presents a brilliant and detailed exposition of one of the best known but most frequently misunderstood passages of Scripture. Here is a comprehensive and exhaustive study of our Lord's words as recorded in Matthew chapter five. This beautiful portion of the Sermon on the Mount is carefully analysed, its contents outlined and thoughtfully arranged, and vastly rich and abundant truths are gleaned for the reader's spiritual nurture. The author brought a wealth of devoted study as well as a profound spiritual appreciation to the work of interpreting this greatest address of our delightful experience in meditation. It presents depth of thought in simple language and beauty of style and contains a veritable thesaurus of spiritual truths drawn from the entire Bible.

The Christ-Centred Preaching of Martyn Lloyd-Jones

This anthology, carefully compiled and edited by Lloyd-Jones's daughter and grandson, begins with a general introduction to his life and ministry, followed by a selection of his sermons from the 1930s to the late 1960s, arranged in chronological order. Each sermon is preceded by an introduction detailing when it was preached, what Lloyd-Jones was doing at the time, why the historical context gave rise to the sermon, and how its message relates to the world today. The collection includes sermons from 1939 (at the start of World War 2); the early 1950s (on the Sermon on the Mount) - when, as J. I. Packer put it, Lloyd-Jones was on a 'plateau of supreme excellence'; 1959 (on revival; preached again in 1980 as his last ever sermon); 24 November 1963 (two days after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy); and 1968 (the final sermons at Westminster Chapel). This powerful volume presents Lloyd-Jones's prophetic preaching anew for contemporary Christians, and will help them understand and appreciate his enduring influence and the biblical truths for which he stood.

Some may object to my dogmatic assertions; but I do not apologise for them. Every preacher should believe strongly in his own method; and if I cannot persuade all of the rightness of mine, I can at least stimulate them to think and to consider other possibilities. I can say quite honestly that I would not cross the road to listen to myself preaching, and the preachers whom I have enjoyed most have been very different indeed in their method and style. But my business is not to describe them but to state what I believe to be right, however imperfectly I have put my own precepts into practice. I can only hope that the result will be of some help, and especially to young preachers called to this greatest of all tasks, and especially in these sad and evil times. With many others I pray that "The Lord of the harvest may thrust forth" many mighty preachers to proclaim 'the unsearchable riches of Christ!'
