The Visigothic Kingdom in Iberia
The structures of the late ancient Visigothic kingdom of Iberia were rooted in those of Roman Hispania, Santiago Castellanos argues, but Catholic bishops subsequently produced a narrative of process and power from the episcopal point of view that became the official record and primary documentation for all later historians. The delineation of these two discrete projects—of construction and invention—form the core of The Visigothic Kingdom in Iberia. Castellanos reads documents of the period that are little known to many Anglophone scholars, including records of church councils, sermons, and letters, and utilizes archaeological findings to determine how the political system of elites related to local communities, and how the documentation they created promoted an ideological agenda. Looking particularly at the archaeological record, he finds that rural communities in the region were complex worlds unto themselves, with clear internal social stratification little recognized by the literate elites.
Materia Magica
Materia Magica approaches magic as a material endeavor, in which spoken spells, ritual actions, and physical objects all played vital roles in the performance of a rite. Through case studies drawing on objects excavated or discovered in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century at three Mediterranean sites, Andrew T. Wilburn identifies previously unknown forms of magic. He discovers evidence of the practice of magic in objects of ancient daily life, suggesting that individuals frequently turned to magic, particularly in times of crises. Studying the remains of spells enacted by practitioners, Wilburn examines the material remains of magical practice by identifying and placing them within their archaeological contexts. His method of connecting an analysis of the texts and inscriptions found on artifacts of magic with a close consideration of the physical form of these objects illuminates an exciting path toward new discoveries in the field.

The first volume of Greed Unbound is about the ways elites siphoned off value from workers in the early Neolithic farming and herding societies. In the broadest terms, it highlights the consequences of greed in officialdom, the offices of kin groups, cults, secret societies, and chiefdoms. Greed in all of these groups has consistently led to severe inequality. Prior to the Agricultural Revolution inequality had been held in check, being restricted to such things as respect for the elderly and male chauvinism. In the mild inequality of the Long Paleolithic, no one person or faction could siphon value from the labor of others. But all that changed once food was stored in farming societies, allowing greedy chiefs to exploit the common people-in stark contrast to the egalitarian nature of life before the development of stored wealth. With the change, exploitation flourished, as did warfare and mystical institutions that functioned to mislead and appease the masses.
