This book focuses on biogas production by anaerobic digestion, which is the most popular bioenergy technology of today. Using anaerobic digestion for the production of biogas is a sustainable approach that simultaneously also allows the treatment of organic waste. The energy contained in the substrate is released in the form of biogas, which can be employed as a renewable fuel in diverse industrial sectors. Although biogas generation is considered an established process, it continues to evolve, e.g. by incorporating modifications and improvements to increase its efficiency and its downstream applications. The chapters of this book review the progress made related to feedstock, system configuration and operational conditions. It also addresses microbial pathways utilized, as well as storage, transportation and usage of biogas. This book is an up-to-date resource for scientists and students working on improving biogas production.

The Valley of South Texas is a region of puzzling contradictions. Despite a booming economy fueled by free trade and rapid population growth, the Valley typically experiences high unemployment and low per capita income. The region has the highest rate of drug seizures in the United States, yet its violent crime rate is well below national and state averages. The Valley's colonias are home to the poorest residents in the nation, but their rates of home ownership and intact two-parent families are among the highest in the country for low-income residential areas. What explains these apparently irreconcilable facts? Since 1982, faculty and students associated with the Borderlife Research Projec...
This new book analyzes the exploration and sustainable valorization of natural resources from the arid zones, putting special emphasis on the challenges that the industry faces in an era of sustainable development and ecological conservation programs. The volume describes the geographic and climatic characteristics as well as the natural resources from arid zones, divided into three main groups: a) microbiological resources as biotechnological tools and change agents to produce and/or obtain compounds with industrial or medicinal applications; b) plants as an important source of principal compounds or subproducts produced by natural adaptation to the extreme environmental conditions; and c) ...
How medieval songbooks were composed in collaboration with the community—and across languages and societies: “Eloquent…clearly argued.”—Times Literary Supplement Today we usually think of a book of poems as composed by a poet, rather than assembled or adapted by a network of poets and readers. But the earliest European vernacular poetries challenge these assumptions. Medieval songbooks remind us how lyric poetry was once communally produced and received—a collaboration of artists, performers, live audiences, and readers stretching across languages and societies. The only comparative study of its kind, Songbook treats what poetry was before the emergence of the modern category poe...
With the increasing resistance exhibited by undesirable microorganisms to tradition-al antibiotics, the need to discover alternative (or, at least, supplementary) treatments to combat chemically resistant microbes is becoming urgent. Quorum sensing (QS) refers to a novel microbial communication system for monitoring cell density and regulation of a network of gene expression that is mediated by a group of signaling molecules called autoinducers (AIs). QS-regulated multicellular behaviors include biofilm formation, horizontal gene transfer, and antibiotic synthesis, which are demonstrating increasing pathogenicity to plants and aquacultural animals as well as contamination of wastewater treat...

In this edited volume, Verma and Dubey collate important discussions from international researchers to address major innovations in the sustainable industrial applications of biomass wastes, including processing fundamentals, extraction, purification, properties, and industrial applications. The amount of biomass waste is rising quickly, and such waste offers numerous advantages for sustainable development, particularly for environmentally friendly industrial use. This book therefore addresses this situation by providing a comprehensive overview of the sustainable industrial uses of biomass wastes. To enable ease of use and to facilitate readers’ ability to implement this information in re...
