An Introduction to Tree-ring Dating

Tree-ring dating, or dendrochronology, is the study of the chronological sequence of annual growth rings in trees. This book--a seminal study in its field--provides a simple yet eloquent introduction to the discipline, explaining what a dendrochronologist does both in the field and in the laboratory. Authors Stokes and Smiley first explain the basic principles of tree-ring dating, then describe details of the process, step by step, from the time a sample is collected until it is incorporated into a master chronology. The book focuses on coniferous evergreens of the Southwest, particularly pi–ons, because they have wide geographic distribution, constitute a large population, and show excellent growth response to certain controlling factors. The book is specifically concerned with the task of establishing a calendar date for a wood or charcoal specimen. This concise but thorough explication of an important discipline will make dendrochonology more meaningful to students and professionals in archaeology, forestry, hydrology, and global change.

Epistolae Aliquot Selectae

This collection of Latin letters by Saint Jerome, translated and edited by A. Allen Woodruff and Gertrude Marvin Woodruff Stokes, offers a fascinating glimpse into the intellectual and religious world of late antiquity. With a mixture of theological arguments, personal reflections, and advice to friends and followers, these letters offer a unique insight into one of the most important figures of the early Christian church. The River Bend is a collection of fifty-six boyhood reminiscences about growing up in the River Bend country of south-central Oklahoma, in the first decades of the Twentieth Century. These little stories first appeared as a weekly column in the Konawa Leader, a Seminole County, Oklahoma, newspaper owned and published by Ed Gallagher. This book is my response to the mountain of correspondence from readers of the column who almost invariably began their letters with: "Have you written a book about this wonderful place?" The "Bend" is twenty-five square miles of rolling hills, scrub oak, and briar patches separated from the rest of the world by the wide and sometimes cantankerous South Canadian River. The nearest town, located in the mouth of the horseshoe bend, is Konawa, which has one paved street and whatever was left standing after the tornado of 1966. The eleventh and last child of a very poor dirt farmer, I grew up thinking I was rich. My family owned a one-hundred-sixty-five-acre farm in the center of the Bend, and on all sides of us were neighbors who seemed like kinfolks. The Great Depression and the Dust Bowl were words no one ever used in my presence.
