An Assessment of the National Institute of Standards and Technology Measurement and Standards Laboratories

This assessment of the technical quality and relevance of the programs of the Measurement and Standards Laboratories of the National Institute of Standards and Technology is the work of the 165 members of the National Research Council's (NRC's) Board on Assessment of NIST Programs and its panels. These individuals were chosen by the NRC for their technical expertise, their practical experience in running research programs, and their knowledge of industry's needs in basic measurements and standards. This assessment addresses the following: The technical merit of the laboratory programs relative to the state of the art worldwide; The effectiveness with which the laboratory programs are carried out and the results disseminated to their customers; The relevance of the laboratory programs to the needs of their customers; and The ability of the laboratories' facilities, equipment, and human resources to enable the laboratories to fulfill their mission and meet their customers' needs.

Analysis of Material Removal Processes

Metal removal processes - cutting and grinding in this book - are an integral part of a large number of manufacturing systems, either as the primary manufacturing process, or as an important part of preparing the tooling for other manufacturing processes. In recent years, industry and educational institutions have concentrated on the metal removal system, perhaps at the expense of the process. This book concentrates on metal removal processes, particularly on the modeling aspects that can either give a direct answer or suggest the general requirements as to how to control, improve or change a metal removal process. This modeling knowledge is more important with automated computer controlled systems than it has ever been before, because quantitative knowledge is needed to design and operate these systems. This senior undergraduate/graduate textbook is aimed at providing the quantitative knowledge, often times at an elementary level, for handling the technological aspects of setting up and operating a metal removal process and interpreting the experience of planning, operating and improving a metal removal process based on rule of thumb approaches.

Education for the Manufacturing World of the Future

The clearly declining competitiveness of the United States in the world marketplace has prompted increased concern about the health of the United States' manufacturing industries. This volume is the result of lively discussions and formal presentations by industry leaders and education experts during a symposium convened by the National Academy of Engineering and the National Research Council. Issues involving the changing face of U.S. manufacturing, requirements for educating and training engineers for manufacturing careers, and the possibilities for cooperative arrangements between industry and academia are examined in-depth in an effort to improve manufacturing education and therefore move toward boosting the nation's world competitiveness in manufacturing.
