In the United States today there is lively discussion, both among educators and employers, about the best way to prepare students with high-level language and cross-cultural communication proficiency that will serve them both professionally and personally in the global environment of the twenty-first century. At the same time, courses in business language and medical language have become more popular among students. Language for Specific Purposes (LSP), which encompasses these kinds of courses, responds to this discussion and provides curricular models for language programs that build practical language skills specific to a profession or field. Josiah Ferguson (ca. 1725-1803), was born in Belfast, County Down, Ireland. He died in Fayette County, Kentucky. His son, William (1754-1839), a Revolutionary War soldier, married Catherine Lemaster in 1783. William and his brothers, Joseph and Robert, came to Pennsylvania in 1771 and then moved to North Carolina and Kentucky. William died in Morgan County, Kentucky. Descendants lived in Kentucky, Missouri, Ohio, Texas, and elsewhere.

In Crippling Epistemologies and Governance Failures, Gilles Paquet criticizes the prevailing practices of the social sciences on the basis of their inadequate concepts of knowledge, evidence and inquiry, concepts he claims have become methodological “mental prisons”. Paquet describes the prevailing policy development process in Canada in terms of its weak information infrastructure, poor accountability, and inflexible organization design. In contrast, he suggests that social science and public policy should promote forms of “serious play” that would allow organizations to experiment with new structures. Paquet engages with numerous foundationalist programs in the social sciences in order to show their inadequacy and suggests important and unexplored directions in policy areas as diverse as education, science, health, intergovernmental and foreign policy.
