This book is intended as a work of reference for the student and lover of the Waverley Novels, and, in a minor degree, for the humanist who sees in Scott a noble nature worthy of closer acquaintance. Its aim is that of a Dictionary and not an Encyclopædia--an identification and description, rather than a condensed narrative, of the multitude of characters created by Sir Walter. No fewer than 2836 characters are comprised in the Dictionary, and these include 37 horses and 33 dogs. A History of the Van Sickle Family, in the United States of America
Ferdinandus Van Sycklin (ca. 1635-ca. 1712) emigrated from Holland, Netherlands to Kings County, Long Island, New York in 1652. He married Eva Antonis Jansen about 1660, and settled as pioneers on Long Island. Descendants (chiefly spelling surname Van Sicklen or or Van Sickle) and relatives lived in New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota and elsewhere.
Covington and Kin
Nehemiah Covington I (1626-1681), a Quaker, immigrated in 1646 from England to Northampton, Accomack County, Virginia. He married twice, and moved to Somerset County, Maryland. Descendants lived in Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Illinois and elsewhere.
