Gwyneth

Gwyneth is vivacious, sociable and has a grand sense of humour. She’s able to put her hand to almost anything she puts her mind to and is afraid of nothing, except the threat of war. Gwyneth’s adolescence was spent with her parents, Herbert and Elsie and younger brother, Peter on two refurbished World War 1 Q-Ships moored on the River Hamble in Hampshire. Newly married for just 6 months, and having had the taste of a fabulous, social life in London, Gwyneth’s husband, Eustace, leaves for West Africa where he’s to be stationed and Gwyneth returns home to her parents. Finding life apart arduous and with Gwyneth’s ardent desire for adventure and travel, Eustace returns home after a year. A visit to Rhodesia House, finds the couple on their way to Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) for a few years of adventure, with the intention of returning to England after several years of exploring and participating in a relatively new, developing country. Mary Gaunt

This is a rare biography of the pioneering Australian author, Mary Gaunt. Born on the Victorian Goldfields in Chiltern in 1861, Mary was well-educated and well-connected. She was a tomboy and a rebel - her father encouraged her, her mother disapproved. One of the first female students to attend the University of Melbourne, she wrote articles and stories in order to fund her travels. She trekked through the great mahogany forests of West Africa. She went to China in the chaos that followed the downfall of the Ch'ing dynasty, and narrowly avoided the marauding White Wolf. She proved that a woman could live by her pen in that era. When war came, she was trapped behind enemy lines and never made it home to Australia.

Maggie Barnes has left her journals to her son, Rowland, but he is puzzled by gaps in her accounts, and he turns to his mother’s dear friend, Alethea, for help. Rowland reviews memories he shaped as a naïve boy, and in the process is forced to admit that he was clueless about much of what was happening around him. Alethea tries to answer Rowland’s questions about his mother, but as she does she realizes that she cannot tell Maggie’s story without telling her own. The hidden stories Rowland and Alethea resurrect and share with each other change them, and their hearts are opened to a connection that bridges the generations.

Just Mary and Maggie Muggins are names that will arouse memories in those who grew up with CBC radio and television in the 1940s and 1950s. The creator of these and other children’s shows, former Fredericton schoolteacher Mary Grannan, became a radio star when she hit the national airwaves in 1939, her popularity peaking when Maggie Muggins moved to television in 1955. Long before The Friendly Giant and Mr. Dressup appeared, her work helped to shape the legacy of gentle children’s programming on CBC. Building on her broadcasting success, Grannan published over thirty books, most runaway best-sellers. Attired in stylish dress, extravagant hats, and enormous earrings, she made frequent gue...
