Why devote a Companion to the "mirrors for princes", whose very existence is debated? These texts offer key insights into political thoughts of the past. Their ambiguous, problematic status further enhances their interest. And although recent research has fundamentally challenged established views of these texts, until now there has been no critical introduction to the genre. This volume therefore fills this important gap, while promoting a global historical perspective of different “mirrors for princes” traditions from antiquity to humanism, via Byzantium, Persia, Islam, and the medieval West. Demonology and Witch-Hunting in Early Modern Europe
Demonology – the intellectual study of demons and their powers – contributed to the prosecution of thousands of witches. But how exactly did intellectual ideas relate to prosecutions? Recent scholarship has shown that some of the demonologists’ concerns remained at an abstract intellectual level, while some of the judges’ concerns reflected popular culture. This book brings demonology and witch-hunting back together, while placing both topics in their specific regional cultures. The book’s chapters, each written by a leading scholar, cover most regions of Europe, from Scandinavia and Britain through to Germany, France and Switzerland, and Italy and Spain. This is a compilation of contributions to the study of the Portuguese playwright Gil Vicente (1465–1536) which appeared between 2005 and 2015. Entries are grouped under three main headings: Editions and Adaptations, Translations, and Critical Studies. The scholarly interest in the father of the Portuguese theater continues unabated, as it can be seen in the great numbers of scholarly works, both editorial and critical, which appeared in the decade under question. The modest aim of this work is to alert scholars as to which of Gil Vicente’s works have not received adequate critical attention. New names are constantly added to the list of established vicentistas and new ways of looking at the dramatist’s works are introduced.

Approaches to Teaching Shakespeare's English History Plays
Shakespeare's history plays make up nearly a third of his corpus and feature iconic characters like Falstaff, the young Prince Hal, and Richard III--as well as unforgettable scenes like the storming of Harfleur. La tragédie et son modèle à l'époque de la Renaissance entre France, Italie et Espagne
Les études présentées ici se focalisent sur un aspect fondamental des techniques de translatio, utilisées par les auteurs du XVIe siècle. Par ailleurs, il s'agit de techniques sur lesquelles se base une partie de la poétique de la Renaissance. Le rapport avec le modèle classique est tout à fait central, au niveau de la traduction et de l'imitation, mais surtout au niveau de la réinterprétation. En effet, s'il est vrai que toute traduction au xvie siècle est aussi une réélaboration du modèle tragique ancien, il est vrai, de même, que les limites théoriques entre les définitions de traduction et d'imitation énoncées en France semblent interchangeables, au point que souvent ces mêmes définitions peuvent fonctionner à la fois pour l'une ou l'autre des deux catégories énoncées, étant parfois construites ou opposées sur des acceptions minimales de sens.
