Bone Marrow T Cells at the Center Stage in Immunological Memory

Increasing evidence supports the notion that bone marrow (BM) represents a relevant player in T cell responses, particularly in its role as a specialized organ for long-term memory. Memory T cells are enriched in the BM over long times after priming, and can be recruited to the periphery upon antigenic challenge. The articles in this research topic include discussions of whether these T cells are passing-through or truly resident, as well as a debate on the extent of proliferation of BM memory T cells. Original research articles in this collection include an analysis of the number of memory T cells found in different bones as well as effects of B cell depletion on T cell memory in the BM. T cells in the BM can influence a number of processes, from bone remodeling, control of cancer, to effects on hemopoiesis or Graft versus Host Disease (GVHD). This research topic contains several contributions to these topics including discussions on how to translate BM T cell knowledge into medicine.

This book gathers contributions by 39 international specialists on well-known but neglected mosquito-borne diseases. The authors highlight pathogens that are increasingly being spread worldwide by various mosquito species, a situation worsened further by migration and tourism. The book addresses significant agents of diseases like AIDS, dengue, Zika virus, malaria and even cancer, and the risk of transmission via mosquito-related vectors. In addition, it examines important means of preventing the outbreak of related diseases by using insecticides and/or repellents. A particular focus is on the unique and sophisticated mouthparts of bloodsucking species, which allow them to feed on blood in an undisturbed manner, and by means of which agents of disease can enter potential human and animal hosts. In brief, the book provides a broad range of information for a wide readership, including graduates, teachers and researchers in the fields of parasitology, virology, tropical medicine and microbiology, as well as practitioners and healthcare officials.

Free Energy Calculations

Free energy constitutes the most important thermodynamic quantity to understand how chemical species recognize each other, associate or react. Examples of problems in which knowledge of the underlying free energy behaviour is required, include conformational equilibria and molecular association, partitioning between immiscible liquids, receptor-drug interaction, protein-protein and protein-DNA association, and protein stability. This volume sets out to present a coherent and comprehensive account of the concepts that underlie different approaches devised for the determination of free energies. The reader will gain the necessary insight into the theoretical and computational foundations of th...

Advances in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third Brazilian Symposium on Bioinformatics, BSB 2008, held in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in August 2008 - co-located with IWGD 2008, the International Workshop on Genomic Databases. The 14 revised full papers and 5 extended abstracts were carefully reviewed and selected from 41 submissions. The papers address a broad range of current topics in computational biology and bioinformatics featuring original research in computer science, mathematics and statistics as well as in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, medicine, microbiology and other life sciences.

Bone Marrow Niche

This volume summarizes recent advances in research on mesenchymal cell populations in the bone marrow. It explores how mesenchymal cells create niches for immune cells in extramedullary organs and it discusses new concepts of lympho-hematopoietic microenvironments. Readers are introduced to the fundamentals of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) differentiation to all types of blood cells, including immune cells, in the bone marrow. The book highlights how this process is supported and regulated by the individual microenvironments of stem cells, termed niches. The identity of HSC niches has been subject to longstanding debates. Recent studies identified the population of mesenchymal stem cells as the major cellular component of niches, for hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) and their candidate developmental origin. Furthermore, candidate cellular niches for immune cells in lymph nodes and adipose and connective tissues were identified. The authors of this volume focus on shared features between those and HSPC niche cells in the bone marrow. Covering latest research results, this book serves as fascinating read for researchers and clinicians in hematology and immunology.

Heteropterans regularly cause a wide variety and large number of problems for humans - at times on a catastrophic scale. The 37,000 described species of this suborder including many pests, disease transmitters, and nuisances exist worldwide, inflicting damage on crops, forests, orchards, and human life. Inspired by the widespread economic impact of

Human Virology

This is the second edition of a well received textbook which was originally published in 1993. The new edition includes major revisions in certain chapters, and integrates the interface between science and medicine more than it did previously. There is also more discussion on clinically important conditions. The bright, bold format, from the first edition has been kept, but has been given a more sophisticated and up-to-date look. Virology, perhaps more than any other discipline, playsan extremely important role in the advances of biomedical research. New discoveries are continually being made, and their subsequent application to the relief of suffering proceed at an ever-increasing pace. Vir...
