David Lamelas

  • Categories: Art

Published by the University Art Museum, California State University, Long Beach in association with Getty Publications The renowned Argentine conceptual artist David Lamelas (born 1946) has an expansive oeuvre of sensory, restive, and evocative work. This book, published to coincide with the first monographic exhibition of the artist’s work in the United States, offers an incisive look into Lamelas’s art. The guiding analytic theme is the artist’s adaptability to place and circumstance, which invariably influences his creative production. Lamelas left Argentina in the mid-1960s to study at Saint Martin’s in London. Since then, he has divided his time among various cities. While the typical narrative invoked about artists like Lamelas is one of “internationalism,” his nomadic movement from one place or conceptual framework to the next has always been more “postnational” than “international.”

Actor-Network Dramaturgies

This book provides key critical tools to significantly broaden the readers’ perception of theatre and performance history: in line with posthuman thought, each chapter engages Actor-Network Theory and similar theories to reveal a comprehensive range of human and non-human agents whose collaborations impact theatre productions but are often overlooked. The volume also greatly expands the information available in English on the networks created by several Argentine artists. Through a transnational, transatlantic perspective, case studies refer to the lives, theatre companies, staged productions, and visual artworks of a number of artists who left Buenos Aires during the 1960s due to a mix of...

Abstract Crossings

  • Categories: Art

Toward the middle of the 1950s, abstract art became a dominant trend in the Latin American cultural scene. Many artists incorporated elements of abstraction into their rigorous artistic vocabularies, while at the same time, the representation of geometric lines and structures filtered into everyday life, appearing in textiles, posters, murals, and landscapes. The translation of a field-changing Spanish-language book, Abstract Crossings analyzes the relationship between, on the one hand, the emergence of abstract proposals in avant-garde groups and, on the other, the institutionalization and newfound hegemony of abstract poetics as part of Latin America’s imaginary of modernization. A profu...

The Spanish Element in Our Nationality”

  • Categories: Art

“The Spanish Element in Our Nationality” delves beneath the traditional “English-only” narrative of U.S. history, using Spain’s participation in a series of international exhibitions to illuminate more fully the close and contested relationship between these two countries. Written histories invariably record the Spanish financing of Columbus’s historic voyage of 1492, but few consider Spain’s continuing influence on the development of U.S. national identity. In this book, M. Elizabeth Boone investigates the reasons for this problematic memory gap by chronicling a series of Spanish displays at international fairs. Studying the exhibition of paintings, the construction of ephemer...

"Brings long overdue recognition and reevaluation to Nueva Figuración. Offers a contemporary reexamination of the artworks beyond that of Argentina’s complex political history for a more global interpretation."--Carol Damian, author of Neorealism and Contemporary Colombian Painting "Chronicles an important and little-known episode in the history of Argentine art and thoughtfully locates the movement within the complex cultural and political landscape of its time."--Abigail McEwen, University of Maryland, College Park Although it is one of Latin America’s most significant postwar art movements, Nueva Figuración has long been overlooked in studies of modern art. In this first comprehensi...
