Manual of Galician Linguistics
The Manual of Galician Linguistics provides a comprehensive and accessible overview of the current situation of the Galician language and introduces its readers to the most important topics of current linguistic research on Galician. Thevolume includes chapters covering diachronic and synchronic descriptions of all main areas of language structure (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and lexicology), as well chapters on social and regional variation, language contact, sociolinguistics, language variation and other interesting areas of linguistic research. Rich in descriptive details and grounded in modern linguistic theory, this manual will be an essential research tool for students and researchers who are interested in the Galician language and in Romance linguistics. Rerouting Galician Studies
This book—aimed at both the general reader and the specialist—offers a transatlantic, transnational, and multidisciplinary cartography of the rapidly expanding intellectual field of Galician Studies. In the twenty-one essays that comprise the volume, leading scholars based in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand engage with this field from the perspectives of queer theory, Atlantic and diasporic thought, political ecology, hydropoetics, theories of space, trauma and memory studies, exile, national/postnational approaches, linguistic ideologies, ethnographic poetry and photography, Galician language in the US academic curriculum, the politics of children’s books, film and visual studies, the interrelation of painting and literature, and material culture. Manual of Romance Languages in Africa
With more than two thousand languages spread over its territory, multilingualism is a common reality in Africa. The main official languages of most African countries are Indo-European, in many instances Romance. As they were primarily brought to Africa in the era of colonization, the areas discussed in this volume are thirty-five states that were once ruled by Belgium, France, Italy, Portugal, or Spain, and the African regions still belonging to three of them. Twenty-six states are presented in relation to French, four to Italian, six to Portuguese, and two to Spanish. They are considered in separate chapters according to their sociolinguistic situation, linguistic history, external language policy, linguistic characteristics, and internal language policy. The result is a comprehensive overview of the Romance languages in modern-day Africa. It follows a coherent structure, offers linguistic and sociolinguistic information, and illustrates language contact situations, power relations, as well as the cross-fertilization and mutual enrichment emerging from the interplay of languages and cultures in Africa.
The Landscape of Lexicography
This book consists of a series of papers that look at three different aspects of the landscape as seen in dictionaries from across Europe. Multilingual diachronic case studies into lexicographical descriptions of flora, landscape features and colours concentrate on three supposedly simple words: daisies (Bellis perenis L.), hills and the colour red. The work is part of the ongoing LandLex initiative, originally developed as part of the COST ENeL - European Network for e-Lexicography - action. The group brings together researchers in lexicography and lexicology from across Europe and is dedicated to studying multilingual and diachronic issues in language. It aims to valorise the wealth of European language diversity as found in dictionaries by developing and testing new digital annotation tools and a historical morphological dictionary prototype. This book, which gathers seventeen contributions, investigates some lexical and textual aspects in the 'sacred texts' - like the Bible in its several textual traditions, and the Qur'ān -, particulary those elements that serve to provide the textual structure with a lexical-semantic framework. These contributions have been focused on several linguistic aspects: etymologies, loanwords, the symbolic or figurative values of the terms used in the text, the syntagmatic potential of the words, and the literary reflection of the terms like the basic reading of the text and its subsequent comprehension.
Imagining Iberia in English and Castilian Medieval Romance
Imagining Iberia in English and Castilian Medieval Romance offers a broad disciplinary, linguistic, and national focus by analyzing the literary depiction of Iberia in two European vernaculars that have rarely been studied together. Emily Houlik-Ritchey employs an innovative comparative methodology that integrates the understudied Castilian literary tradition with English literature. Intentionally departing from the standard “influence and transmission” approach, Imagining Iberia challenges that standard discourse with modes drawn from Neighbor Theory to reveal and navigate the relationships among three selected medieval romance traditions. This welcome volume uncovers an overemphasis in prior scholarship on the relevance of “crusading” agendas in medieval romance, and highlights the shared investments of Christians and Muslims in Iberia’s political, creedal, cultural, and mercantile networks in the Mediterranean world.
Italienisch am Río de la Plata
Argentinien ist seit über 150 Jahren Ziel italienischer Einwanderung, was zu einem Aufeinandertreffen der italienischen und spanischen Sprache führte. Der Band widmet sich der Analyse dieses in der bisherigen Fachliteratur nur wenig beachteten Sprachkontakts. Nach einem Blick auf die historischen Aspekte der Kontaktsituation werden die Ergebnisse einer soziolinguistischen Enquête vorgestellt, die 2005 im Großraum Buenos Aires durchgeführt wurde. Das besondere Augenmerk der Studie richtet sich hierbei auf den italienischen und spanischen Sprachgebrauch der Immigranten und deren Nachfahren in zweiter und dritter Generation, die Verankerung der italienischen Sprache im Kulturleben am Río de la Plata sowie die spanischen Interferenzen im Italienischen der Italo-Argentinier.
Phraseology in Multilingual Society
