An incredible season for algebraic geometry flourished in Italy between 1860, when Luigi Cremona was assigned the chair of Geometria Superiore in Bologna, and 1959, when Francesco Severi published the last volume of the treatise on algebraic systems over a surface and an algebraic variety. This century-long season has had a prominent influence on the evolution of complex algebraic geometry - both at the national and international levels - and still inspires modern research in the area. "Algebraic geometry in Italy between tradition and future" is a collection of contributions aiming at presenting some of these powerful ideas and their connection to contemporary and, if possible, future developments, such as Cremonian transformations, birational classification of high-dimensional varieties starting from Gino Fano, the life and works of Guido Castelnuovo, Francesco Severi's mathematical library, etc. The presentation is enriched by the viewpoint of various researchers of the history of mathematics, who describe the cultural milieu and tell about the bios of some of the most famous mathematicians of those times.
A forgotten episode of mathematical resistance reveals the rise of modern mathematics and its cornerstone, mathematical purity, as political phenomena. The nineteenth century opened with a major shift in European mathematics, and in the Kingdom of Naples, this occurred earlier than elsewhere. Between 1790 and 1830 its leading scientific institutions rejected as untrustworthy the “very modern mathematics” of French analysis and in its place consolidated, legitimated, and put to work a different mathematical culture. The book contains a selection of 43 scientific papers by the great mathematician Ennio De Giorgi (1928-1996), which display the broad range of his achievements and his entire intellectual career as a problem solver and as a proponent of deep and ambitious mathematical theories. All papers are written in English and 17 of them appear also in their original Italian version in order to give an impression of De Giorgi’s original style. The editors also provide a short biography of Ennio De Giorgi and a detailed account of his scientific achievements, ranging from his seminal paper on the solution of Hilbert’s 19th problem to the theory of perimeter and minimal surfaces, the theory of G-convergence and the foundations of mathematics.
