From the theories developed by Humberto Maturana to explain the living being (Autopoiesis Theory and Biology of Cognition) Mateus Esteves-Vasconcellos extracted a general theory applicable to all systems. Then he developed a general theory for autonomous systems, especially focusing on social systems. New scientific paradigms started in the 20th century finally found a rigorous, inclusive and transdisciplinary theoretical description.

An articulating and integrating frame of reference, for understanding the paradigmatic changes taking place in Science, proposed by Maria José Esteves de Vasconcellos. Following the developments that happened within science itself – in Thermodynamics, Quantum Physics, Cybernetics, Biology, to name a few, – during the 20th century, we can clearly see how such developments pushed science towards its limits and made some scientists rethink their epistemological assumptions. We, then, associate the three new assumptions of the new-paradigmatic science – complexity, instability, and intersubjectivity – with what has been identified as a world systemic view: a view that, while scientific, focuses on the relations rather than on the artificially isolated elements, as it has been done by the traditional science.
This book argues for computer-aided collaborative country research based on the science of complex and dynamic systems. It provides an in-depth discussion of systems and computer science, concluding that proper understanding of a country is only possible if a genuinely interdisciplinary and truly international approach is taken; one that is based on complexity science and supported by computer science. Country studies should be carefully designed and collaboratively carried out, and a new generation of country students should pay more attention to the fast growing potential of digitized and electronically connected libraries. In this frenzied age of globalization, foreign policy makers may – to the benefit of a better world – profit from the radically new country studies pleaded for in the book. Its author emphasizes that reductionism and holism are not antagonistic but complementary, arguing that parts are always parts of a whole and a whole has always parts.
John Mingers' new volume, Self-Producing Systems: Implications and Ap plications of Autopoiesis, is a much-needed reference on autopoiesis, a subject penetrating many disciplines today. I can genuinely say that I enjoyed reading the book as it took me stage by stage through a clear and easy-to-grasp understanding of the concepts and ideas of auto poiesis and then, as the book's title suggests, on through their applica tions. I found the summary in Chapter 12 particularly useful, helping to crystalize the main points of each chapter. The book conveyed enthusi asm for the subject and stimulated my interest in it. At times the book is demanding, but only because of the breadth of the subject ma...
The books in the Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series demonstrate the University Press of Florida’s long history of publishing Latin American and Caribbean studies titles that connect in and through Florida, highlighting the connections between the Sunshine State and its neighboring islands. Books in this series show how early explorers found and settled Florida and the Caribbean. They tell the tales of early pioneers, both foreign and domestic. They examine topics critical to the area such as travel, migration, economic opportunity, and tourism. They look at the growth of Florida and the Caribbean and the attendant pressures on the environment, culture, urban development, and the m...
