EconoClash Review #4

Every one likes a good cheap thrill, but if you enjoy quality schadenfreude you'll love the tightly wound tales found between the covers of ECR number four. Number Four: The elemental number: Earth-wind-fire-books...I mean air. Four is the tetrad...the perfect number...a number for all mankind. These stories pulse with realism as they swing wildly between genres and bring you the joy in other people's pain. The one, the only Rex Weiner kicks things off with a fantastic peek into realistic crime and punishment; and the one, the only, A.B. Patterson closes the show with the most transgressive thing I've read outside a public lavatory. Everyone in between brings vivid, pulse pumping action and suspense mixed nicely with severe moments of WTH. ECR #4 proudly features the authors: Mark Slade, Jon Zelazny, Robert Petyo, Hailey Piper, Matthew X. Gomez, Mark Slade, J.L. Boekenstein, Hatebreaker, J.S. Rogers, and C.W. Blackwell. The Rise of Darkness

The Rise of Darkness

There I sat in this dilapidated run down shack. It's in the middle of the night and I had to light a fire in the hearth so that I could see better. Now I'm sitting on a wobbly stool. In front of me is a low laying bed with a small figure in it. It was covered all the way to its chin. I watched as my shadow danced on the wall and splayed across the bed and the lonely figure. I can't believe that I came all this way in the pursuit of knowledge. I sat there waiting and finally the person in front of me sat up and was instantly cloaked in the darkness that was my shadow. It was kind of discomforting when his small voice spoke. "Now come closer sonny you need to hear this. I, Brentwin Forrester, the last of the great story tellers, am about to tell you a tale. It is about an extraordinary man with an extraordinary life. I shall begin with his rise to power. If I do not last through the night, the journals on the dresser shall tell you the rest of his story." I leaned closer and watched as Brentwin began his tale of a man that was both myth and legend.

Mount Greenwood Cemetery

Established in 1879 on 111th Street in the Beverly area of Chicago, Mount Greenwood Cemetery is an open-air museum that reflects three centuries of history. The Victorian cemetery--with its large, decorative monuments set on a rolling landscape amid winding roads--is an oasis treasured by its neighbors and by families whose loved ones rest there. It is home to educators, artists, veterans, businessmen, social reformers, ministers, and everyday people. The grounds also host heroes who stepped up in a time of need and people who lost their lives in epidemics and horrific disasters. On any given day, joggers in colorful gear can be seen running past a group on a brisk morning walk. Signs announce an upcoming history program or 5K race. Workers plant flowers on the grounds, while family historians ponder the memorials. A Civil War group places markers on veterans' tombstones. Members of a service organization walk to their monument, planning an event. A group of schoolchildren examines graves, and a journalist snaps a photograph.

'Holgate guides us expertly and with a deft touch along the journey towards the holy grail of unlimited energy for all.' - JIM AL-KHALILI 'What is nuclear fusion? In clear and accessible language, this book explains the basics and the hope for the future. A valuable addition to the Hot Science series.' - JOHN GRIBBIN Could the Sun hold the key to a future of clean energy? Since the 1950s, scientists have attempted to harness nuclear fusion - the process that creates the Sun's energy - to generate near-limitless amounts of electricity. But the fact that we still have no fusion power plants is testament to the complexities of the challenge. Now, the deepening climate crisis means that researchers around the world are in a race to create a mini-Sun here on Earth. The glittering prize is an energy source that emits no greenhouse gases and could solve energy equity and supply issues at a stroke. Sharon Ann Holgate, a former Young Professional Physicist of the Year, tells the compelling story of the ongoing scientific quest for a revolutionary new era of green energy production.

Filipinx American Studies

This volume spotlights the unique suitability and situatedness of Filipinx American studies both as a site for reckoning with the work of historicizing U.S. empire in all of its entanglements, as well as a location for reclaiming and theorizing the interlocking histories and contemporary trajectories of global capitalism, racism, sexism, and heteronormativity. It encompasses an interrogation of the foundational status of empire in the interdiscipline; modes of labor analysis and other forms of knowledge production; meaning-making in relation to language, identities, time, and space; the critical contours of Filipinx American schooling and political activism; the indispensability of relationa...

Life is going according to plan for young Jared Hernandez. School, friends, his first job, his first love. What lies beneath the usual drama is something beyond Jared’s wildest dreams, and he discovers a world where demons, vampires, werewolves, gods and goddesses blend into the everyday. Where magic becomes a reality. Where love is a force stronger than any other. Long before the birth of humanity, the Founding Magic was created. Chaos, order and time came together to form the supernatural, ushering a lavish age of myth where gods and goddesses reigned. With the human soul, however, came great power. To restore the delicate balance, the Distinction of Realms was enacted to mask magic from humanity. Jared must now walk that balance if he is to survive.
