A Church in the House

“The families of Christians should be little Churches: or, Wherever we have a house, God should have a Church in it.” The Rev. Matthew Henry is most well-known for the timeless and practical expositions found in his commentaries on the Old and New Testaments. What most people don’t know, however, is that Henry was a model husband and father who believed that a properly organized home life includes as a necessity a strong spiritual foundation. Henry believed that while the home is not meant to replace the church, it is meant by God to be a place of spiritual growth and renewal. In that vein, A Church in the House is a manual of sorts, showing us that effective ministry inside the home is just as important as ministry done on the outside.

This devotional contains over 170 quotes from Matthew Henry's writings. John Sherman, the compiler, states in the book's Preface: "Matthew Henry was an English divine who wrote in the eighteenth century, distinguished for his devotional spirit, practical piety, sound common sense, and intelligent views of the teachings of the Bible. In view of the life and character of so good and gifted a person, it is hoped these selections will be received with favor, displace reading that is frivolous, correct that which is erroneous, and promote morality and religion. Some of the sentences will find response in many minds."

Matthew Henry (1662 -1714) was a British Non-Conformist minister and author. Henry's commentaries are primarily exegetical, dealing with the scripture text as presented, with his prime intention being explanation, for practical and devotional purposes. While not being a work of textual research, for which Henry recommended Matthew Poole's Synopsis Criticorum, Henry's Exposition gives the result of a critical account of the original as of his time, with practical application. It was considered sensible and stylish, a commentary for devotional purposes. Famous evangelical Protestant preachers such as George Whitefield and Charles Spurgeon used and heartily commended the work, with Whitefield r...

Matthew Henry, in an exposition of John 14:1: "Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me," makes plain that a person cannot simply believe in God, but must also believe in Jesus Christ. The "natural religion" of belief in God cannot Biblically stand without the revealed religion of Jesus Christ. In the first part he describes the objects of our faith, the Father and the Son. In the second part he shows the acts of our faith in Christ must be the same as our acts of our faith in God. In the third part he shows the necessary connection between believing in God and believing in Jesus Christ.

Matthew Henry presents a rigorous treatment of the Gospel, describing sin as a debt, as found in Matthew 6:12. He says: "This similitude, which represents sin as a debt, and the pardon of sin as the forgiving of that debt, our Saviour often used: and it is a proper one, and very significant." This first part answers the questions of how we are in debt to God, what kind of debt sin is, what kind of debtors sinners are, and the danger of these debts. The second part covers what is included in the forgiveness of sin as a debt, why we have hope for it, and what is required of us. The third part gives six applications. This hard to find sermon is sure to interest anyone looking into the heart of Christianity.
