Report of the Expert Consultation on the Proposed Sub-committee on Aquaculture of the Committee on Fisheries, Bangkok, Thailand, 28-29 February 2000
This is the report of the Expert Consultation on the Proposed Sub-Committee on Aquaculture of the Committee on Fisheries, held at the request of the 23rd Session of COFI in the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, Bangkok, Thailand, from 28 to 29 February 2000. The expert consultation confirmed that the growing importance of aquaculture, including culture-based fisheries, and its interactions justified a focused global intergovernmental mechanism to provide the opportunity for information exchange, discussion and consensus-building among the various parties interested in aquaculture development and to establish an efficient means of advising and guiding COFI and FAO. The consultation concluded that establishment of such a subcommittee would be in line with FAO Conference Resolution 13/97 and that the expenditure of funds for the subcommittee would be justified. They identified the major issues and six key priority areas that need to be addresse, emphasizing that the role of aquaculture for enhancing food security and economic development in FAO member countries was a primary priority.
Report of the Expert Consultation on Small-Scale Rural Aguaculture, Rome, Italy, 28-31 May 1996
The objective of the Consultation was to provide FAO and its members with information and advice on the role of small-scale aquaculture in rural development. To this end, participants were asked to analyze and reflect on four keynote papers prepared by selected participants. In addition, four information papers were presented and discussed. This document presents a summary of discussions and principal conclusions reached, followed by abstracts and full versions of the overview and thematic papers plus the abstracts of the information papers.

This document represents the final report of the Regional Consultation for Europe and North America on the development of Guidelines for Sustainable Aquaculture (GSA), held virtually from 27 to 29 April 2021. The objectives of the consultation were to: share current policies and practices related to aquaculture in the regions; review existing regional and national instruments for sustainable aquaculture; develop a list of priority thematic modules considering regional and national strengths and challenges; propose and prioritize possible case study concepts linked to one or more thematic modules; and identify regional priority areas to be included in the GSA.

Report of the Regional Consultation for Eastern Europe and Central Asia on the development of Guidelines of Sustainable Aquaculture (GSA)
The report presents the results of Eastern Europe and Central Asia regional consultation on the development of Guidelines for Sustainable Aquaculture (GSA). The consultation was held as a virtual meeting from 29th to 31st March 2021. It was attended by representatives from member countries in the Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and it is the fifth of a series of regional consultations to share current policies and practices, review the existing regional sustainable aquaculture instruments, develop a list of priority thematic modules and discuss regional case study concepts.
Farmers taking the lead: thirty years of farmer field schools
The Farmer Field School (FFS) has been one of the most successful approaches developed and promoted by FAO over the past three decades, empowering farmers to become better decision makers in their own farming systems. Initiated by FAO in 1989, and subsequently adopted by many other organizations and institutions, the FFS programs constitute one of the most important “results of the collective action of millions of small-scale farmers” that FAO has supported. FFS is an interactive and participatory learning by doing approach that offers farmers, pastoralists, fisherfolks, foresters and their communities a place where they can learn from each other,share experiences, co-create knowledge and try new ways of doing. Participants enhance their understanding of agro-ecosystems, resulting in production systems that are more resilient and optimize the use of available resources. FFS aims to improve farmers’ livelihoods and recognize their role as innovators and guardians of natural environments. FFS has attained plenty of outstanding achievements in all aspects of agriculture and rural development.
