Døbt navnet Moritz, som illigitim søn af Aurora af Königsmarck og August den Stærke, kurfyrste af Sachsen og konge af Polen, tog han tidligt navnet Maurice de Saxe. Blev ansat under den franske konge Louis XV, hvor han hurtigt forfremmedes til marskal og var den ansvarlige for, at Frankrig vandt de mange slag i den periode.
