Rural Writing
If, as a corollary of urbanization, many artists seized, as early as the nineteenth century and most of the twentieth century, the city as object and scene of their reflection on a world under construction, it was not the same for rural areas. Generally speaking, until recently, the countryside's representations have been shaped by the writings of a ruling class. However, in recent decades, alongside the “country novels” or “terroir novels” that follow in line with the rustic current initiated in the nineteenth century, more demanding literary productions have emerged. These writings, often fed by the sense of loss and the end of a certain agricultural lifestyle, are also exploring the contemporary reconstructions of rural areas, little publicized. They redefine a new “regionality”, less militant and certainly less connoted in its nostalgic link to the land. This book revisits rural areas and their representations in contemporary writing, in both popular and high culture, in order to draw a global landscape of current rural areas and new regionalities.

This volume is a comprehensive analysis of the Atlas of the Principality of Polatsk (1580), one of the oldest cartographic representations of the military conflict between Russia (Muscovy) and the Western world. Its author, the Polish royal cartographer Stanisław Pachołowiecki, drew the maps at the beginning of the Livonian War (1579–1582) when the Polish-Lithuanian army liberated the Lithuanian and Livonian lands from Muscovian occupation. The Mapping of a Russian War focuses on the military aspects of the maps, their political and propaganda use, and the Early Modern construction of the past through maps. Habiter et vivre dans les campagnes de faible densité
Alors que, plus encore que celui des sociétés industrielles, l'avenir des sociétés de services paraît se jouer dans la centralité des grandes agglomérations et dans leur proximité immédiate, pourquoi s'intéresser aujourd'hui aux campagnes marquées par la faible densité de leur peuplement ? C'est que celles-ci ne peuvent plus être considérées comme le négatif déprimé de celles-là. Participant de la modernité sociale, la rareté des hommes, notion relative qu'il convient d'analyser, en fait des espaces maintenant désirés, arpentés, appropriés aussi par les citadins et pour lesquels s'impose la mise en oeuvre de politiques publiques spécifiques. Ce sont quelques-uns des thèmes qui sont discutés dans cet ouvrage, fruit d'un colloque de géographes français et espagnols spécialisés dans l'analyse des campagnes.
