Carlo Urbani, an Italian doctor and microbiologist, made history as the first person to identify and classify Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) or atypical pneumonia during its outbreak between 2002 and 2003. Tragically, he succumbed to the same disease on March 29th, 2003, while working in Bangkok. Two decades later, this book aims to not only recount the story of the “SARS doctor” to younger generations who may only be familiar with his name through schools or streets named after him but also to introduce readers to the man behind the remarkable achievement. She deals with specific phenomena regarding the mental health of a population living within low-income and assisted housing in the city of Rome, Italy. As we turn the pages of her work we begin to understand the psychiatrist’s interpretations and goals, which would be hard to ignore for a true anthropologist. There is a constant and continuous debate on numerous aspects, from various viewpoints that are constantly changing – a fundamental rule for this type of work. This allows us to overcome the limits of what we know. Seeing that which we could not previously see and think, or that we saw and thought of differently, the act of observing takes on a new face, gaining greater security and also expanding our ability to intervene in this context.
Sapienza for International Development Cooperation

Migration and Integration in a Post-Pandemic World
As the world emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic, this book explores current migration and integration challenges. Against the background of long-term migration trends, it asks whether the pandemic has changed the patterns observed, transformed the circumstances international migrants face at destination or whether the opportunities and challenges for integration have been altered. Twenty-four researchers have contributed to this volume with research attention on how COVID-19 has affected transnationalism and identity, labour market employment, and impacted the discrimination of migrants in a variety of ways. Loyalties and tensions created by the need to include also hesitant migrant groups in vaccination programmes are explored. The role of cosmopolitanism and welfare chauvinism in narratives on inward migrations flows, the stance of trade unions on migration, the complexities of implementing return policies, and the challenges faced by unaccompanied refugee youth from Afghanistan are also discussed.
The Adaptation of Health Care Services to the Demand for Health Care and Health Care Services of People in Marginal Situation
This publication contains the text of Recommendation Rec (2001)12 adopted by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in October 2001, together with an explanatory memorandum. This recommendation aims to protect and improve the health of people living in poverty by proposing a multi-sectoral approach which promotes preventive action and the creation of supportive environments. This approach seeks to avoid stigmatisation, since measures adopted to improve access for the socially vulnerable also serve the general population.
