The Politics of Cultural Mediation
Translators mediate between cultures; they negotiate the transfer of meaning from one word and world to another. Writers who migrate, uprooting themselves from one world and settling in another, also mediate between cultures and are mediated by them. This collection of essays explores the contact zones produced by the migrations of two German-born cultural figures: New York Dada poet and artist Else Plötz (1874–1927), better known as Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven or simply "the Baroness"; and writer and translator Felix Paul Greve (1879–1948), aka the Canadian author Frederick Philip Grove. Both figures negotiated languages beyond their mother tongue (German); both moved between geographic and cultural worlds; both produced cultural works in their adopted countries (the United States and Canada); and both "translated" themselves into new contexts. The Politics of Cultural Mediation features contributions by Richard Cavell, Jutta Ernst, Irene Gammel, Paul Hjartarson, Klaus Martens and Paul Morris and includes Morris’s translation of Greve’s "Randarabesken Zu Oscar Wilde."
Transplant Tourism
This book explores the role that international and national laws must play in the prohibition and eradication of transplant tourism and proposes a three-stage legal model for the prohibition of the practices. Through the examination of international law norms, principles and instruments; laws and policies from several legal systems; and legal frameworks and models which currently prohibit a number of national, transnational and international offences, this publication focuses on the creation of a comprehensive soft law instrument on transplant tourism, a treaty on transplant tourism and unified national transplant tourism laws with extraterritorial application in accordance with the principles and spirit of the international law instruments.
Designing Indicators for a Plural Legal World
Designing Indicators for a Plural Legal World engages with the role of quantification in law, and its impact on law and development and judicial reform. It seeks to examine how different institutions shape and influence the making and use of legal indicators globally. This book sheds light on the limitations of existing quantification tools, which measure rule of law due to their lack of engagement with contexts and countries in the Global South. It offers an alternative framework for measurement, which moves away from an institutional look at rule of law, to a bottom up, user centered approach that places importance on the lives that people lead, and the challenges that they face. In doing so, it offers a way of thinking about access to justice in terms of human capabilities.

Der neue Menschenrechtsrat und das Hochkommissariat für Menschenrechte der Vereinten Nationen
Maximilian Spohr beschäftigt sich mit der Entstehung, Entwicklung und Zusammenarbeit des Menschenrechtsrats und des Hochkommissariats für Menschenrechte der Vereinten Nationen. Anlässlich der Gründung des neuen Menschenrechtsrates im Jahr 2006 geht er der Frage nach, wie sich die Zusammenarbeit zwischen dem zentralen intergouvernementalen Menschenrechtsorgan der Organisation und dem Hochkommissariat verändert hat. Der Autor bewertet die Reform dabei überwiegend kritisch. So sei vor allem im Zuge der institutionellen Aufwertung des neuen Menschenrechtsrates die Unabhängigkeit des Hochkommissariats verstärkt in Frage gestellt worden. Begünstigt durch arbeitsorganisatorische Probleme am Hochkommissariat, sei es in Reaktion hierauf zu einer Abgrenzung des auf dem Mandat des Hochkommissars beruhenden Tätigkeitsbereichs gekommen. Somit sei heute insbesondere der wichtige Bereich der Vorortmissionen des Hochkommissariats kein Gegenstand der Kooperation der beiden Organe.
