Conflict Talk in English as a Lingua Franca
This volume aims to fill two gaps in pragmatic research into English as a lingua franca (ELF): the investigation of conflict talk and the incorporation of a multimodal perspective into the analysis of ELF interactions. To this end, multimodal conversation analysis is used, combined with the perspective of politeness theory. The author shows how interactants use multimodal resources to manage competitive overlaps, disagreement, and third-party complaints in casual ELF conversations among friends. In doing so, the notion of cooperativeness is re-examined, and the appropriateness of an intercultural approach to analyzing multimodal resources in ELF interactions is demonstrated.
English as a Lingua Franca in Japan
This edited book examines the phenomenon of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) in the Japanese context, using multilingualism as a lens through which to explore language practices and attitudes in what is traditionally viewed as a monolingual, monocultural setting. The authors cover a broad spectrum of topics within this theme, including language education policies, the nature of ELF communication in both academic and business settings, users’ and learners’ perceptions of ELF, and the pedagogy to foster ELF-oriented attitudes. Teaching and learning practices are reconsidered from ELF and multilingual perspectives, shifting the focus from the conformity to native-speaker norms to ELF users’ creative use of multilingual resources. English as a Lingua Franca among Adolescents
This volume is not only the first book-length investigation into adolescents’ use of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF), it also explores ELF in an African-European context, which has received little attention in ELF research so far. The book examines the interplay between language, culture and identity in adolescents’ ELF interactions. It combines quantitative and qualitative approaches to explore strategies secondary school students employ in a German-Tanzanian student exchange in order to reach their communicative goals. Introducing and drawing on the TeenELF corpus, the book investigates the speaker- and situation-specific potential of repetition and repair, complimenting, laughter and humour as well as various practices of translanguaging. The study reveals ELF as a transcultural space, in which different linguacultural influences meet and merge, while meaning, rapport and identity are interactionally negotiated. In the face of an increasing interest in ELF-informed pedagogy, the present approach investigates the communicative needs and competences of school students and derives both theoretical as well as classroom implications from its linguistic findings.
