The The Olsztyn Group in the Early Medieval Archaeology of the Baltic Region: The Cemetry at Leleszki deals with a much neglected problem of the archaeology of the early Middle Ages. Between the 5th and the 7th century, the region of the Mazurian Lakes in northeastern Poland witnessed the rise of communities engaged in long-distant contacts with both Western and Eastern Europe. Known as the Olsztyn Group, the archaeological remains of those communities have revealed a remarkable wealth and diversity, which has attracted scholarly attention for more than 130 years. Besides offering a survey of the current state of research on the Olsztyn Group, Mirosław Rudnicki introduces the monographic study of the Leleszki cemetery (district of Szczytno, Poland) as one of the most representative sites. The prosperity and long-distance contact revealed by the examination of this cemetery shows that the West Baltic tribes had considerable influence in early medieval Europe, much more than scholars had been ready to admit until now.
Contacts and Contrasts in Cultures and Languages
This volume provides descriptions and interpretations of social and cognitive phenomena as well as processes that emerge at the interface of languages and cultures in the context of contrastive and contact linguistics and media discourse. Facing Nationalisms in the European Union
Ideological nationalism is rising in most EU countries and threatens the unity of the Union. Primarily populist parties use it as a political instrument in their fight for power, presenting the European Union as a danger to national identity. According to Eurosceptical politicians, the EU imposes European identity instead of a national identity. This book argues that not only can those identities coexist, but they can also exacerbate each other. Instead of rejecting nationalism in general, it suggests that the EU should oppose only its ideological forms that lead to xenophobia and hostility toward other nations. At the same time, the books shows that EU policy should protect and support member states’ efforts to maintain and preserve their uniqueness and national cultural identity, which is threatened not by European integration, but by inevitable globalization.

The Explicit Material gathers varied perspectives from the discourses of conservation, curation and humanities disciplines to focus on aspects of heritage transmission and material transitions. The authors observe and explicate the myriad transformations that works of different kinds - manuscripts, archaeological artefacts, video art, installations, performances, film, and built heritage - may undergo: changing contexts, changing matter, changing interpretations and display.
