Mechanochemical processing is a novel and cost effective method of producing a wide range of nanopowders. It involves the use of a high energy ball mill to initiate chemical reactions and structural changes. High energy ball milling: Mechanochemical processing of nanopowders reviews the latest techniques in mechanochemistry and how they can be applied to the synthesis and processing of various high-tech materials.Part one discusses the basic science of mechanochemistry with chapters on such topics as the mechanism and kinetics of mechanochemical processes, kinetic behaviour in mechanochemically-induced structural and chemical transformations and materials design through mechanochemical proce...

Luminescence Thermometry

Luminescence Thermometry: Methods, Materials, and Applications presents the state-of-the art applications of luminescence thermometry, giving a detailed explanation of luminescence spectroscopic schemes for the read-out of temperature, while also describing the diverse materials that are capable of sensing temperature via luminescence. Chapters cover the fundamentals of temperature, traditional thermometers and their figures of merit, a concise description of optical thermometry methods, luminescence and instrumentation, and an explanation of the ways in which increases in temperature quench luminescence. Additional sections focus on materials utilized for luminescence thermometry and the br...

Colossal Magnetoresistance, Charge Ordering and Related Properties of Manganese Oxides

Metal oxides constitute one of the most amazing classes of materials with a wide range of properties. They exhibit a variety of phenomena, such as ferroelectricity, ferromagnetism and superconductivity. A new aspect of metal oxides -- colossal magnetoresistance exhibited by certain manganese oxides, in particular rare earth manganates of perovskite structure -- has received much attention in the last four years. Some of these oxides show 100% magnetoresistance and have much potential for technological applications. Previously this phenomenon was found only in layered and granular metallic materials. Studies of colossal magnetoresistance have led to the discovery of many other new phenomena and properties such as charge ordering and orbital ordering. In view of the importance of colossal magnetoresistance, charge ordering and related phenomena exhibited by oxides to the physics and chemistry of solid materials, it is necessary and timely to have a book dealing with these topics. This book begins with a review of the subject followed by contributions from a number of experts which cover the present status of the subject.

Mechanical Properties and Deformation Behavior of Materials Having Ultra-Fine Microstructures

Mechanical Properties and Deformation Behavior of Materials Having Ultra-Fine Microstructures

This book focuses on the emerging class of new materials characterized by ultra-fine microstrucures. The NATO ASI which produced this book was the first international scientific meeting devoted to a discussion of the mechanical properties and deformation behavior of materials having grain sizes down to a few nanometers. Topics covered include superplasticity, tribology, and the supermodulus effect. Review chapters cover a variety of other themes including synthesis, characterization, thermodynamic stability, and general physical properties. Much of the work is concerned with the issue of how far conventional techniques and concepts can be extended toward atomic scale probing. Another key issue concerns the structure of nanocrystalline materials, in particular, what is the structure and composition of the internal boundaries. These ultra-fine microstructures have proved to challenge even the finest probes that the materials science community has today.

Mechanochemistry of Materials

Considerable advances have been made in mechanochemistry in the last couple of decades. Training of experts in this field with a background in materials science, chemical and mechanical engineering, etc. requires study of the fundamentals of mechanochemistry. There is a need for a textbook in the general and compressed form which would cover many aspects and would be used as a basis for understanding the fundamental principles to control mechanochemical phenomena. This textbook is based on lectures given by Prof Gutman in a graduate course in the mechanochemistry of materials at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. The book contains examples of experimental results to illustrate the mechanochemical phenomena and technologies Contents What is mechanochemistry of materials? Basic features of the behaviour of solids relevant to mechanochemical processes Irreversible thermodynamics of mechano-chemical reactions Kinetics of mechanochemical reactions under different stress state Main types of heterogeneous mechano-chemical reactions Mechanoelectrical phenomena and mechano-emission Application of mechanochemistry in materials engineering

This volume describes state-of-the-art protocols that serve as “recipes” for scientists concentrating on fibrosis research. This book is divided into four sections. Part I focuses on animal models of fibrosis and covers topics such as mimicking fibrosis in the lungs, skin, liver and heart, and generating transgenic mouse models. Part II discusses cell culture systems, where the chapters explore cell types important for the development of fibrosis. Part III looks at the purification, quantification, and analysis of the ECM proteins, and Part IV describes computer-assisted methods such as quantifying fibrillar collagen alignment and exploring the nano-surface of collagen with atomic force microscopy (AFM). Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Cutting-edge and practical, Fibrosis: Methods and Protocols is a valuable resource aimed at outstanding quality and repeatability of research experiments in the fibrosis field.
