Vols. 2-6 of the CAIB's Final Report contain appendices that provide the supporting documentation for the main text of the Final Report contained in Vol. 1, which was released on Aug. 26, 2003. These appendix materials were working documents. They contain a number of conclusions and proposed recommendations, several of which were adopted by the CAIB in Vol. 1. The other conclusions and proposed recommendations drawn in Vols. 2-6 do not necessarily reflect the views of the CAIB but are included for the record. When there is conflict, Vol. 1 takes precedence. It alone is the CAIB's official statement.

From Leaders to Rulers

What is the role of leadership in society? Why do people surrender their political autonomy to the decision-making authority of leaders and rulers? Why do people follow the commands of their leaders? Who gets to be king/chief/emperor and why? Why are some societies centralized while others are not? The papers in this volume draw on the archaeological record of societies from around the world to address these critical issues in contemporary social science.

Women Who Made the News

The first newspaperwomen were employed to attract female subscribers and advertising revenue. Once hired, they found themselves confined to a narrow range of specialties that catered to conventionally defined women's interests - home-making, fashion, and high society - and most were patronized by their male peers. But these women journalists did more than simply deliver female consumers to advertisers. Some of them eventually made names for themselves as commercial reporters or political and even war correspondents. By making news about women for women, they created a distinctly female culture within the newspaper, chronicling the increasing participation of women in public affairs. Women Who Made the News is the story of the women who helped raise Canadian women's collective awareness of each other and of their achievements in the period leading up to World War II.

This book offers a range of interdisciplinary evaluations of the history of same-sex relationships in the Church as they have been understood in different periods and contexts. The relationships between diverse forms of religious and sexual identities have been widely contested in the media since the rise of the lesbian and gay liberation movement in the 1970s. One of the key images that often appears in public debate is that of ‘lesbians and gays in the Church’ as a significant ‘problem’. Research over the past forty years or so into queer theology and the history of same-sex desire has shown that such issues have played an important role in the story of Christianity over many centu...
