Based on interviews with Poles, Jews, and Ukrainians who lived in the small eastern Polish town of Brzezany before, during, and after World War II, together with extensive research into the historical record and his own childhood memories, historian Shimon Redlich reconstructs the changing relationships among Brzezany's three ethnic groups. The book details the history of Brzezany from the pre-war decades when members of the three communities remember living relatively amicably "together and apart" when Brzezany was part of independent Poland, through the tensions of Soviet rule from 1939 to 1941 and the trauma of the Nazi occupation from 1941 to 1944, to the recapture of the town by the Red Army in 1945. Each chronological chapter is introduced by Redlich's recollections, continues with an examination of the events as documented in local sources, and concludes with the observations of his interviewees. Historical and contemporary photographs of Brzezany and its inhabitants add immediacy to this fascinating excursion into history brought to life by those who lived through it, showing how events are remembered and interpreted often in very different ways.
Menachem Katz, a Holocaust survivor form the town of Brzezany, was eyewitness to the 1943 Nazi massacre of the towns last remaining Jews who were shot one by one one at the ancient Okopisko cemetery. 18 year old, Munio, as Menachem was known, was part of a group of 300 Jewish men, marked with the letter "W", who worked for the Germany Army, the Wehrmacht. While it was thought that they would have a greater chance of survival, they were the first victims of this last deadly roundup. Munio was th only "W" person to escape and run away. This is his story of survivla.

Memoirs of a Jew born in 1925 in Brzeżany, Poland (now Ukraine). Ch. 1 (p. 9-26) was written ca. 1975 in first person and describes Katz's escape from a massacre on 12 June 1943, the day the Brzeżany ghetto was liquidated and his father was killed. The remainder of the book, written in fictional form, describes his life in hiding. He and seven other Jews, including his mother and sister (who hid during the final roundup), were hidden by a Polish farmer, Piotr Kmieć, until the liberation in July 1944. The Katz family emigrated to Eretz-Israel in 1947.

The author applies the fields of gender studies, psychoanalysis, and literature to Talmudic texts. In opposition to the perception of Judaism as a legal system, he argues that the Talmud demands inner spiritual effort, to which the trait of humility and the refinement of the ego are central. This leads to the question of the attitude to the Other, in general, and especially to women. The author shows that the Talmud places the woman (who represents humility and good-heartedness in the Talmudic narratives) above the character of the male depicted in these narratives as a scholar with an inflated sense of self-importance. In the last chapter (that in terms of its scope and content could be a freestanding monograph) the author employs the insights that emerged from the preceding chapters to present a new reading of the Creation narrative in the Bible and the Rabbinic commentaries. The divine act of creation is presented as a primal sexual act, a sort of dialogic model of the consummate sanctity that takes its place in man’s spiritual life when the option of opening one’s heart to the other in a male-female dialogue is realized.
