In northern Sumatra, as in Malaya, colonial rule embraced an extravagant array of sultans, rajas, datuks and uleebalangs. In Malaya the traditional Malay elite served as a barrier to evolutionary change and survived the transition to independence, but in Sumatra a wave of violence and killing wiped out the traditional elite in 1945-46. This volume of the Bibliographical Series is a thoroughly revised English edition, with many additions, of the author's 'Chronique de l'histoire coloniale. Outre-mer neerlandais' published in May 1958 in the French periodical 'Revue d'histoire des colonies' (Tome XLIV, 1957, pp. 311-448). A stricter observance of bibliographical detail has been aimed at, mainly through the efforts of the editorial staff of the Institute. In some instances, however, the form of a continuous narrative, chosen for this bibliography, made it impossible to give full titles. Maritime Empires
Britain's overseas Empire pre-eminently involved the sea. In a two-way process, ships carried travellers and explorers, trade goods, migrants to new lands, soldiers to fight wars and garrison colonies, and also ideas and plants that would find fertile minds and soils in other lands. Ideology and Revolution in Southeast Asia 1900-1980
The concept of 'Asian Values' has recently been emphasized by East and South East Asian political leaders. These leaders have argued that European political values have exercised an unhealthy hegemony over the international system, not only because of global influence exercised by European ideas during the colonial period, but because of 'Anglo-Saxon' dominance over the world orders that were set up in the aftermath of both the First and Second World Wars. This book considers the interaction between indigenous ('Asian') values and European ideology and the influence this relationship had on the nationalist and revolutionary movements of Southeast Asia that dominated the political systems of Southeast Asia in the period 1945-1975.
