It is a key text for scholars and students in social science, history, science and technology studies (STS), cultural studies, and gender and sexuality studies, and a resource for journalists, policymakers, and anyone interested in assisted reproduction. The book traces the work of IVF teams as they developed new techniques and laid the foundations of a multi-billion-dollar industry. It analyses the changing definitions and experience of...
This volume presents the processing of the 15th ICMBE held from 4th to 7th December 2013, Singapore. Biomedical engineering is applied in most aspects of our healthcare ecosystem. From electronic health records to diagnostic tools to therapeutic, rehabilitative and regenerative treatments, the work of biomedical engineers is evident. Biomedical engineers work at the intersection of engineering, life sciences and healthcare. The engineers would use principles from applied science including mechanical, electrical, chemical and computer engineering together with physical sciences including physics, chemistry and mathematics to apply them to biology and medicine. Applying such concepts to the human body is very much the same concepts that go into building and programming a machine. The goal is to better understand, replace or fix a target system to ultimately improve the quality of healthcare. With this understanding, the conference proceedings offer a single platform for individuals and organizations working in the biomedical engineering related field to gather and network with each other in so doing create the catalyst for future development of biomedical engineering in Asia.
In A. E. W. Mason's novel 'The Broken Road,' readers are taken on a thrilling journey through the desolate landscapes of war-torn Abyssinia, where the protagonist, John Hilliard, navigates the moral dilemmas and personal conflicts that arise in the midst of battle. Mason's descriptive prose and vivid storytelling immerse the reader in the heart-wrenching realities of war, highlighting the fragility of human relationships and the complexities of honor and duty. Written in a clear and evocative style, 'The Broken Road' is a timeless exploration of the impact of war on individuals and societies, making it a classic work of literature within its historical context. A. E. W. Mason's personal experiences as a soldier during World War I undoubtedly influenced his compelling portrayal of the psychological and emotional effects of conflict in 'The Broken Road.' His ability to capture the human experience in times of crisis shines through in this poignant novel, adding depth and authenticity to the narrative. I highly recommend 'The Broken Road' to readers interested in exploring the profound themes of war, loyalty, and morality in a gripping and thought-provoking setting.

Words as Events introduces the tradition of short, communicative rhyming couplets, the mantinádes, as still sung and recited in a variety of performance situations on the island of Crete. Recently, these poems have also entered modern mass media and they are widely being exchanged as text messages by Cretans. Focusing on the multi-functionality of the short form, Sykäri demonstrates how the traditional register gives voice to individual experiences in spontaneous utterances. The local focus on communicative economy and artistry is further examined in a close analysis of the processes and ideals of composition. By analyzing how the “restrictions” of form and performative conventions in ...
