Dust

One of the first scientists to take samples from Ground Zero after the destruction of the Twin Towers, Lioy shares his personal and professional perspectives on the World Trade Center dust. What was in the material that rained down after the disintegration of these buildings? Why did officials wrongly choose to focus on the release of asbestos? How did the size of the dust particles influence the development of the World Trade Center Cough among rescue workers and other New Yorkers? When were respirators used on site and what changes should be made to respirator design now? Dust answers these, and many other, questions about the environmental effects, public policy initiatives, health outcomes and scientific findings that played a critical role in the aftermath of September 11th. Beyond providing insightful analysis of what happened then, this book details the significant steps we need to take in order to better prepare for future catastrophes.

Blaze (Men of Inked: Heatwave #4)

Lily Gallo prided herself on her pristine reputation. A dedicated bookworm. An awkward goody-two-shoes. Lover of fiction more than reality. Jett Michaels had always had a broken moral compass. A cocky egomaniac. An unashamed womanizer. Craving adventure instead of responsibility. Lily never expected to come face-to-crotch with her old high school crush, and she never dreamed he’d make her an offer she couldn’t refuse. But what was supposed to be a platonic arrangement quickly spiraled out of control. Can the inexperienced nerdy girl tame the notorious player? Or will he peel back her pages, exposing the wildcat hidden underneath? Blaze is a full-length standalone novel in the Men of Inke...

Chemicals, Cancer, and Choices

This book offers readers a unique way to sort through the rhetoric that accompanies questions of science and health. Surprisingly, the answers are not to be found in more and better scientific research. Better studies can reduce - but not eliminate - our uncertainty about chemical side effects. The market provides the sorting mechanism through which many of the conflicts may be reconciled. In the case of exposures that arise from the consumption of specific products, markets permit individuals to choose their level of exposure. Even when everyone is exposed to chemicals in the air, the creation of a market for emission rights would allow the cautious to purchase such rights and reduce their exposure. Emission rights also would allow firms to increase their pollution in return for compensating everyone else for increased risk. In short, the market affords individualized responses to chemical risk as an alternative to government-imposed rules for everyone.
