This book investigates the experience of the colonized in their landscape setting, and proposes an 'archaeology of taxation' to investigate the relationship between local community and central control.
Originally published in 1910, this book contains an exhaustive study of the use of the phrase 'Son of Man' in the Old and New Testaments. Abbott illustrates how Christian writers used the mystical trope present in many books of Jewish prophecy to convey their belief in Christ as an eschatological figure foretold by Scripture. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in Christology and the use of this enigmatic title in Jewish and Christian theology.
The Late Byzantine period (1261–1453) is marked by a paradoxical discrepancy between economic weakness and cultural strength. The apparent enigma can be resolved by recognizing that later Byzantine diplomatic strategies, despite or because of diminishing political advantage, relied on an increasingly desirable cultural and artistic heritage. This book reassesses the role of the visual arts in this era by examining the imperial image and the gift as reconceived in the final two centuries of the Byzantine Empire. In particular it traces a series of luxury objects created specifically for diplomatic exchange with such courts as Genoa, Paris and Moscow alongside key examples of imperial imagery and ritual. By questioning how political decline refigured the visual culture of empire, Cecily J. Hilsdale offers a more nuanced and dynamic account of medieval cultural exchange that considers the temporal dimensions of power and the changing fates of empires.
It's Annual Day for the beleaguered classfellows at Core Town Academy, the flagship school within the heart of the bleak, oppressive Empire. It's a long, miserable day where each senior classfellow is callously reviewed and rated by the hard-hearted deans and icy Headmaster in a grim, intolerant prelude of their adult lives to come. Every senior walks into the Chamber of Consequence fearing how the deans will decide their futures and what paths they will be forced to follow. Some will enlist in the Garrison, some will be approved for university, but most will be denied their dreams with some sentenced to a lifetime of backbreaking manual labor. With the Empire's strict speech laws, ever-watc...

This illustrated guide is unique. Fans of Miami Vice, Scarface, Burn Notice, and 80s Miami movies will appreciate it. The guide will also interest students of Miami history and Art Deco as well as those nostalgic about Miami in the 80s. It explains for the first time that these shows are really a time capsule of long gone Miami scenes. They serve as a record of when Miami was 1980s America on steroids. Burn Notice, an innovative show in its own right, followed Miami Vice's lead. When compared to similar scenes from Vice, recent TV shows reveal the distinctiveness of the 80s. These TV shows also provide a window into today's Miami. The guide shows where views of long gone iconic locations and typical Miami scenes can be found on the DVDs. The value of Miami Vice to South Florida is explained. Personal observations are provided by the author who lived there during the Vice years. All music played on Miami Vice is listed as well as key locations in all Vice, movies, and recent TV episodes.
