Captain Laurence Michael Murray Obituary
Handwritten obituary signed "Savannah & Jacksonville papers please copy," re Captain Laurence Michael Murray, a native of Charleston, South Carolina, who served as captain in merchant marine before and after the Civil War. "He was in command prior to the Civil War of the famous Confederate cruiser, Nashville, and took the steamer into Charleston after the bombardment of Fort Sumter while being chased by the revenue cutter Harriet Lane. During the war he was a successful blockade runner. The first screw steamer, Edith, that ever crossed the Atlantic was brought over by him and taken to Wilmington, N.C. where the Confederate government took it and made it into a cruiser" (Charleston News and Courier, 18 November 1900, page 16). Murray married Sarah Ann Calkins (1830-1908), daughter of Judson Hall Calkins (1798-1853) and Sara Fiero (1797-1860).

Interview with COL J. Mike Murray
Colonel John "Mike" Murray served as commander of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 1st Cavalry Division in Iraq from March 2004 to March 2005. His area of responsibility began as the Green Zone (later called the International Zone) and included essentially Baghdad proper. Primary duties included the escort mission for the Coalition Provisional Authority/US Embassy. His proximity to the CPA allowed him ready access to various advisors and the opportunity to observe the CPA's and the US Embassy's operational behavior before and after the transfer of sovereignty on 28 June 2004.
