Christopher G. Foster identifies Jewish mystical elements in the Dead Sea Scrolls and compares them with analogous features in the Corinthian correspondence to illuminate through differences and similarities how Paul advocates a mystical and communal participation in the Spirit. After defining early Jewish mysticism and introducing the method of heuristic comparison, Part I identifies and investigates mystical elements in Dead Sea Scrolls. Part II compares these findings with corresponding aspects in 1 and 2 Corinthians to demonstrate the largely corporate tenor of participation and transformation in and by the spirit for Paul.
Too few Christians today, says Joshua Jipp, understand hospitality to strangers and the marginalized as an essential part of the church's identity. In this book Jipp argues that God's relationship to his people is fundamentally an act of hospitality to strangers, and that divine and human hospitality together are thus at the very heart of Christian faith. Jipp first provides a thorough interpretation of the major biblical texts related to the practice of hospitality to strangers, considering especially how these texts portray Christ as the divine host who extends God's welcome to all people. The Virgin Birth According to Temple Christology builds an exegetical, theological, and catholic case for understanding Jesus’ incarnation as an act of divine temple construction. It attempts to explain that Jesus-the-temple had to have a virgin mother because of Jesus’ unique status as the temple of God who was “made without human hands.” This study answers the call to reintroduce the nexus between Christology and typology as they were originally bound together by theologians such as Athanasius of Alexandria. Unfortunately, for most of church history, Christology and typology have gone their separate ways. This divergence is so stark that the imagery and words of scripture have lost their voice in the context of Christian dogmatics. David H. Wenkel demonstrates that a typological study of biblical persons, events, and institutions can increase our understanding of Jesus, especially of his virginal conception.
