Images of Nations and International Public Relations

This volume addresses the importance of images of nations in international relations. One fundamental assumption is that the behavior of states is not the same as that of individuals. States are social systems whose behavior as a rule directly corresponds neither to the motives of their respective leaders nor to those of their populations. However, it is also self-evident that international activities always depend on personal relationships. The studies presented relate to more or less deliberate attempts to induce change in images. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the subject matter, findings made in public relations, advertising research, prejudice research and other fields are also taken into account. Very often it is impossible to distinguish between the image of the nation-state and the images of big enterprises such as Krupp, Ford, or Coca Cola. For this reason, the country of origin effect is also discussed.

Contributors offer perspectives from Canada, France, Germany, Israel, Italy and the United States.

Philosophies of the Future and the Non-Human

This book examines philosophical aspects of the future of man and humanity, focusing on questioning what is and what constitutes “being human” in the face of scientific and technological developments and possible coexistence with machines and artificial intelligence. In this sense, the contribution of these authors is the establishment of a new discipline that analyses our technological future, which may be populated by enhanced cyborgs, avatars, and autonomous robots. This scientific-technological future brings about practically inconceivable social and philosophical consequences. Thus, this book answers the questions: What are the ethical and ontological issues and assumptions we make about humans and how will these change with time? Moreover, how should we think of human existence in this new and emerging world?

Historical Reflections on Kenya

This book thematically tackles issues that relate to the perpetual struggle between the forces of control and the forces of mental and intellectual liberation in Africa and Kenya in particular. The book addresses the colonial legacy of poverty creation, as well as the socio-political conditioning of Africans to dislike each other and to be irresponsible and disunited in the face of external threats. Poverty, hatred of other Africans, and excessive dependency on European powers can be traced to the policies adopted by colonial officials. Related to these issues, is post-colonial Kenya's attempts to addresses the political developments, the involvement of different types of media in those developments, Kenya's foreign policy, and the problem of political party transition. Ultimately, there are topical issues that continue to affect Kenya which include the question of coalition politics, the lessons of the 2002 elections, the media and corruption, parliament and foreign policy, and Africa's relations with the United States of America.

Media System and News Selections in Namibia

What is the status quo of the Namibian media system? What radio and TV stations, what newspapers and magazines compete for the attention of the Namibian citizen? What is the situation regarding press freedom and the formal education prospective journalists receive? How do Namibian journalists select news? Is the so far European-focused News Value Theory a sensible explanatory approach for that? How does news selection differ from Namibia to Germany, from private to state media in Namibia, from print to broadcasting? These are some of the central issues author Andreas Rothe addresses in this English language version of his diploma thesis.

Only when they have had right information about the public interest they can participate in their community as citizens. In this book we collected different significant contributions on communication and the main current questions of moral dilemmas.
