Photographer Michael Schulz is interested in the forms, colors, textures, weird niches, bright light, and the humor of the moment. He published his fi rst smartphone photo in fall 2010 on Instagram. His channel, Berlinstagram, grew rapidly and soon became one of the most popular German accounts, with nearly a half-a-million fans. In the mean- time, Schulz has been using other types of cameras to provide material for both his own channel and other peo- ple's channels, too. He is a company consultant and creates visual marketing campaigns, traveling around the world for his assignments. For Berlin Stories #5 Michael Schulz has opened up his archive and selected his favorites as well as images not published ever before.

Mapping the New World Order

This groundbreaking study maps out and analyzes the development ofa global intergovernmental (IGO) institutional architecture in thepost World War II era. Systematically traces similarities and differences between theinstitutional architecture of the Cold War and post-Cold Wareras Examines the range of reasons why states join IGOs, identifiespatterns of participation within these organizations, and examinesthe effects of membership on states Considers the impact of the EU on other regional organizationsand developments outside Europe Provides a strong contribution to the study of internationalorganization and IGO development combining both quantitative andqualitative methodologies

War and Peace in Transition

A systematic approach to analyzing some of the transient aspects of war and peace with empirical cases that include Iraq, Israel-Palestine, Sri Lanka, and the Armenian genocide, this book discusses some of the critical and transformative issues in war and peacemaking. Considering subjects such as the roles of private military and security companies, the use of force in peace-support operations, how states, organizations, and individuals contribute to conflict resolution, and the challenge of coordinating various peacemaking efforts, this study explores the manifold demands and challenges facing external actors such as international peacekeeping forces and mediators.

Hydrodynamics of Time-Periodic Groundwater Flow

Hydrodynamics of Time-Periodic Groundwater Flow introduces the emerging topic of periodic fluctuations in groundwater. While classical hydrology has often focused on steady flow conditions, many systems display periodic behavior due to tidal, seasonal, annual, and human influences. Describing and quantifying subsurface hydraulic responses to these influences may be challenging to those who are unfamiliar with periodically forced groundwater systems. The goal of this volume is to present a clear and accessible mathematical introduction to the basic and advanced theory of time-periodic groundwater flow, which is essential for developing a comprehensive knowledge of groundwater hydraulics and g...

Strings, Branes, and Gravity

Many of the topics in this book are outgrowths of the spectacular new understanding of duality in string theory which emerged around 1995. They include the AdS/CFT correspondence and its relation to holography, the matrix theory formulation of M theory, the structure of black holes in string theory, the structure of D-branes and M-branes, and detailed development of dualities with N = 1 and N = 2 supersymmetry. In addition, there are lectures covering experimental and phenomenological aspects of the Standard Model and its extensions, and discussions on cosmology including both theoretical aspects and the exciting new experimental evidence for a non-zero cosmological constant.

Particle Diffusion in the Radiation Belts

The advent of artificial earth satellites in 1957-58 opened a new dimension in the field of geophysical exploration. Discovery of the earth's radiation belts, consisting of energetic electrons and ions (chiefly protons) trapped by the geomagnetic field, followed almost immediately [1,2]' This largely unexpected development spurred a continuing interest in magnetospheric exploration, which so far has led to the launching of several hundred carefully instrumented spacecraft. Since their discovery, the radiation belts have been a subject of intensive theoretical analysis also. Over the years, a semiquantitative understanding of the governing dynamical processes has gradually evol ved. The under...

Philosophy of Religion in Latin America and Europe

The title of this publication suggests a double meaning: on the one hand, most of the contributions outline philosophies of religion relevant for Latin America, without, however, betraying an explicit Latin American perspective. Does not philosophical reason always articulate itself in the same way, whether in Berlin or Rio de Janeiro? On the other hand, the title refers to a specific form of philosophy that has developed regionally and bears explicit traces of its origins that differentiate it from philosophy in Europe. Does not philosophical reason always articulate itself in a specific cultural context? The charm of the book lies in the encounter of these two variants to think philosophically.
