Life Behind the Mask

More than forty years of umpiring youth baseball, there has to be a book in there somewhere. Well, here it is. Over a hundred tales from an umpire's viewpoint behind the mask. Three runners on the same base. Close enough is good enough? Lepidopterology. And, of course, poison ivy.

No one's going to accuse appropriation artist-photographer ichael Schafer of trying to deceive anyone with his photo montages. The manipulation of images is obvious in the witty works featured in this exhibition catalog: Schafer chops the heads off political figures and replaces them with movie stars, making a powerful statement about the meaning of a public identity. Take away the persona and what's left? In the two bodies of works featured, Berlin-based Schafer uses computer-aided photo montage as a content-based image strategy. In one group, pupils at an elite boarding school put on business outfits and the camera catches them acting out expected social roles. In another, the artist re-stages press photos of politicians and business people, showing their essential isolation.

Die deutsche Präsenz in den USA

Whereas the cultural and political influence of the U.S. on Europe and Germany has been researched extensively, the impact of more than 6 million German immigrants on U.S.-American history and culture has received far less scholarly attention. Therefore this volume addresses a wide range of areas in which a German presence has been manifesting itself in the U.S. for more than three centuries. Among the disciplines involved in this broad analysis are linguistics, literary studies, history, economics, musicology as well as media studies and cultural studies.

Tangled Paths

An intimate biography of an eminent historian of art and culture, exploring his life both within and away from the academy. Tangled Paths tells the life story of Aby Warburg (1866–1929), one of the most influential historians of art and culture of the twentieth century. It also tells the story of a man who, throughout his life, struggled to assert his place in the world. Charting Warburg’s many projects and identities—groundbreaking historian, public intellectual, ethnographer, shrewd academic administrator, and founder of a library—the book explores not only the vagaries of an academic career but also the personal demons of a man who relentlessly sought to live up to his own expectations. In this biography—the first in English in over fifty years—Hans C. Hönes presents an evocative and richly detailed portrait of Warburg’s personality and career, and of his attempts to make sense of the tangled paths of his life.

My Life with Michael is an erotic fantasy for anyone who has ever wanted to have their beer and drink it, too. Surprisingly sweet, the story follows the course of an adulterous affair between two ordinary people confronting the changes that aging brings to the experience of love and sexuality. With humor and honesty, my novel explores the pleasures and pitfalls of the adulterous relationship: the crudity of the courtship, the raw sexuality that ultimately lapses into monotony, and, inevitably, the bittersweet farewell. Excerpt: Mentally I commanded my heart to cease its infernal yammering. Then I saw that it was ten till and I still had to get to the tenth floor and I figured I'd better hurr...
