Battery Powered Romance

"Doubt and fear no longer mattered. Reality or simulation, he no longer cared. He loved her and that was the only reality that mattered. She meant more to him now than his lifelong ambitions and he knew if he could achieve all his hopes and dreams he would give them up just to be with her. To Rose it was as if the hole that his previous rejection had left was filled with warmth. Pain and anger replaced with something so wonderful that she would never be able to give it up. In her role she had kissed hundreds of clients and it had meant as little to her as a software update. But this kiss was the first she had truly felt. Every second his lips caressed hers was a second of joy that she gave back to him with a desire and intensity she had never felt before."

Embattled Shadows

Other Canadian film producers concentrated their efforts on short productions, mostly in government or commercial companies such as Associated Screen News of Montreal. The works of Gordon Spalding, Bill Oliver, and Albert Tessier are discussed in this context. Morris concludes with the founding of the National Film Board which, under the dynamic guidance of John Grierson, was to breathe new life into a moribund industry. In a postscript Morris explores some of the reasons for the unique development of Canadian film making -- particularly its use of natural settings and documentary when virtually the rest of the world's industry was following the Hollywood pattern of studio location and fictional plots -- and examines the relationship of the early industry to later developments in Canadian film making. At a time when Canada's cultural industries are struggling to survive in the wake of the Free Trade Agreement with the United States and under the threat of Free Trade with Mexico, Embattled Shadows makes essential reading.

No Mercy from the Japanese

By the laws of statistics John Lowry should not be here today to tell his story. He firmly believes that someone somewhere was looking after him during those four years. Examine the odds stacked against him and his readers will understand why he hold this view. During the conflict in Malaya and Singapore his regiment lost two thirds of its men. More than three hundred patients and staff in the Alexandra Military hospital were slaughtered by the Japanese he was the only known survivor. Twenty six percent of British soldiers slaving on the Burma Railway died. More than fifty men out of around six hundred died aboard the Aaska Maru and the Hakasan Maru. Many more did not manage to survive the harshest Japanese winter of 1944/45, the coldest in Japan since record began. Johns experiences make for the most compelling and graphic reading. The courage, endurance and resilience of men like him never ceases to amaze.

This is a new biography of the Founder of the Legion of Mary, one of the Catholic Church's most effective charitable agencies in the world today. In the Legion of Mary, Duff built an organisation that depended on each member playing his or her part, rather than on any individual leader. Describing responsibility as 'the biggest tonic on earth', he believed in sharing responsibility, and warned against thinking that others cannot do things as well as we can ourselves. The Legion of Mary is an organisation of lay Catholics dedicated to every form of social service and Catholic action for the welfare of the Church and of society. Duff's vision of a lay movement was revolutionary in its time and as recounted in this book explains why he faced so much opposition from Church authorities, especially in Ireland. But Duff, who is on the path towards canonisation, exemplified the Catholic tradition of charitable work at its best - that you do not preach by lecturing but by works of mercy, compassion and unselfish altruism. This is an inspiring tale.
