Microbeam Analysis in Biology contains the proceedings of a workshop on Biological X-Ray Microanalysis by Electron Beam Excitation, held in Boston, Massachusetts on August 25-26, 1977. This book focuses on the principles, techniques, and biological use of electron probe microanalysis, energy-loss spectroscopy, and ion probe microanalysis. This text reflects the emphasis of the workshop on presenting the principles of analysis, the optimization of operating conditions, the description of successful techniques for sample preparation and quantitation, the illustration of problems and pitfalls, and the direction of microbeam analysis in biology.

Molecular Diversity in Drug Design

High-throughput screening and combinatorial chemistry are two of the most potent weapons ever to have been used in the discovery of new drugs. At a stroke, it seems to be possible to synthesise more molecules in a month than have previously been made in the whole of the distinguished history of organic chemistry, Furthermore, all the molecules can be screened in the same short period. However, like any weapons of immense power, these techniques must be used with care, to achieve maximum impact. The costs of implementing and running high-throughput screening and combinatorial chemistry are high, as large dedicated facilities must be built and staffed. In addition, the sheer number of chemical...

Correlation Analysis in Chemistry

This book, Correlation Analysis in Chemistry: Recent Advances, is a sequel to our Advances in Linear Free Energy Relationships. t The change in the title is designed to reflect more accurately the nature of the field and the contents of the volume. The term LFER is still widely used, but it is often applied rather loosely to correlation equations that are not LFER in the restricted sense of a relationship involving logarithms of rate or equili brium constants on each side of the equation. The term "correlation analysis" seems to us more appropriate for the whole subject. The use of this term has compelled us also to introduce "chemistry" into the title; we have preferred not to prefix this w...

Reclaiming Communist Philosophy

This book is unique in its utilization of the natural sciences to explain and illustrate key concepts of communist philosophy. In its recapitulation of the spirit of Engels’s unfinished manuscript, The Dialectics of Nature, it relies on the physical sciences developed since Engels’s time to reaffirm the validity of materialist dialectics, a point which is more easily made in the context of natural phenomena than it is in social phenomena. The basic philosophical tenets underlying Communist ideology are all supported by the natural sciences. The book is situated within the Marxist-Leninist-Maoist tradition. Its overarching theme is the need to reclaim our most fundamental weapon of that tradition—it’s methodology or philosophy—which has been vitiated or even scrapped by well-intentioned revolutionaries throughout the 20th century. In particular, some of Mao’s philosophical formulations are found to be erroneous and in opposition to his practice. With the rapidly accelerating deterioration of the global capitalist order in progress since 2007, the urgency of this reclamation cannot be over-emphasized.

Television and Adolescents: An Empirical Study

The impact of television on the lives of the people including the adolescents is widely investigated by the behavioral scientists and media scholars in the world. The present book is primarily based on an empirical investigation conducted by the authors in Karnataka state on the impact of television on adolescents. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Global Strategy for Women's, Children's and Adolescents' Health calls for accelerated action for the health and progress of adolescents. The book is the result of the comprehensive empirical study carried out by the authors. It contains about 07 chapters namely - salient features of television, determinants of personality, scient...

Chemometric Methods in Molecular Design

The statistical analysis of experimental and theoretical data lies at the heart of modern drug design. This practice-oriented handbook is a comprehensive account of modern chemometric methods in molecular design. It presents strategies for making more rational choices in the planning of syntheses, and describes techniques for analyzing biological and chemical data. Written by the world's experts, it provides in-depth information on * molecular concepts * experimental design in the planning of syntheses * multivariate analysis of chemical and biological data * statistical validation of QSAR results An additional benefit: the book contains a critical survey of commercially available software packages both for statistical analysis as well as for special applications. Industrial and academic researches in medicinal chemistry and organic chemistry will value this book as a useful source of information for their daily work.
