This chronicle of the first battle in the Anglo-Zulu War is “the most powerful and moving modern account of the great Zulu epic that I have ever read” (Richard Holmes, historian and author of The Age of Wonder). On January 22, 1879, a massive Zulu host attacked the British Army’s 24th Regiment in its encampment at the foot of the mountain of Isandlwana. It was the first major encounter in the Anglo-Zulu War and a disastrous defeat for the colonial power. Later that afternoon the victorious Zulus would strike the tiny British garrison at Rorke’s Drift. How Can Man Die Better is a unique analysis of the Battle of Isandlwana, covering the weapons, tactics, terrain, and the intriguing characters who made key military decisions. While much is still unknown about the battle, this work eschews the commonly held perception that the British collapse was sudden and that the 24th Regiment was quickly overwhelmed. Rather, historian Mike Snook argues that there was a protracted and heroic defense against a determined and equally heroic foe. A British Army colonel who served in South Africa, Snook reconstructs the final phase of the battle in a way that has never been attempted before.
Fishing Saskatchewan features fishing as a year-round activity, from summer walleye and pike fishing, to fly-fishing in the province's streams, to northern fly-in trips, to ice fishing. Sections dedicated to techniques and tackle provide specific information about how to fish for Saskatchewan fish. Chapters on fish stocking, commercial fishing, competitive fishing, and fisheries management look back over more than a hundred years of angling in the province.
This title explores the role of digital advocacy organizations, a major new addition to the international arena. It provides a detailed investigation of the power that these organizations have, the ways in which they differ from traditional NGOs, their memberships and networks, and how their campaigns are launched and distributed.
The two-volume proceedings LNCS 9056 + 9057 constitutes the proceedings of the 34th Annual International Conference on the Theory and Applications of Cryptographic Techniques, EUROCRYPT 2015, held in Sofia, Bulgaria, in April 2015. The 57 full papers included in these volumes were carefully reviewed and selected from 194 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections named: honorable mentions, random number generators, number field sieve, algorithmic cryptanalysis, symmetric cryptanalysis, hash functions, evaluation implementation, masking, fully homomorphic encryption, related-key attacks, fully monomorphic encryption, efficient two-party protocols, symmetric cryptanalysis, lattices, signatures, zero-knowledge proofs, leakage-resilient cryptography, garbled circuits, crypto currencies, secret sharing, outsourcing computations, obfuscation and e-voting, multi-party computations, encryption, resistant protocols, key exchange, quantum cryptography, and discrete logarithms.
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Cryptographer's Track at the RSA Conference 2017, CT-RSA 2017, held in San Francisco, CA, USA, in February 2017. The 25 papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 77 submissions. CT-RSA has become a major publication venue in cryptography. It covers a wide variety of topics from public-key to symmetric key cryptography and from cryptographic protocols to primitives and their implementation security. This year selected topics such as cryptocurrencies and white-box cryptography were added to the call for papers.
Directory services matter to nearly every organization because they help centrally manage information and thereby reduce the costs of computing services. LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) is a set of protocols that have become the internet standard for accessing directories. Many people need to understand directory services and LDAP in order to make decisions for their business. The books currently available are too advanced for technical managers and those new to directory services. This book is designed to fill that need. The author spends the first half of the book exploring how directory services and LDAP work and then the second half discussing the most popular implementations - OpenLDAP, Microsoft Active Directory, and Directory Server - for those who are trying to compare products. This book provides the technical foundation that will enable IT managers to make sound business decisions and developers to move on to more advanced books.
The 2010 campaign and election was pivotal: the Republican takeover of the House, the advent of "super PACs," and record-breaking sums spent on a midterm election. More than ever before, interest groups were able to mobilize new resources and new technologies in a shifting set of House and Senate races. This timely volume explores—in a series of lively case studies—a cross-section of groups, communities, and networks that vividly illustrates the "unleashing" of interest group activity in the electoral process in response to Citizens United and other court cases and events.
In the early 1880s the Mahdi unleashed a spectacularly successful jihadist uprising against Egyptian colonial rule in the Sudan. Early in1884 Cairo bowed to British pressure to withdraw. Beyond the Reach of Empire describes how Major General Charles Gordon was despatched to evacuate Khartoum and turn the Sudan over to self-rule. It goes on to explain how and why the mission backfired, and then homes in on Sir Garnet Wolseley's planning and execution of the long-delayed Gordon Relief Expedition which arrived, according to popular myth, only two days after the city had fallen and Gordon had been killed.??Colonel Mike Snook's narrative is characterized by scrupulous attention to detail, an inst...
