This little book is especially concerned with those portions of ”advanced calculus” in which the subtlety of the concepts and methods makes rigor difficult to attain at an elementary level. The approach taken here uses elementary versions of modern methods found in sophisticated mathematics. The formal prerequisites include only a term of linear algebra, a nodding acquaintance with the notation of set theory, and a respectable first-year calculus course (one which at least mentions the least upper bound (sup) and greatest lower bound (inf) of a set of real numbers). Beyond this a certain (perhaps latent) rapport with abstract mathematics will be found almost essential.

This textbook is designed for a one-year course in real analysis at the junior or senior level. An understanding of real analysis is necessary for the study of advanced topics in mathematics and the physical sciences, and is helpful to advanced students of engineering, economics, and the social sciences. Stoll, who teaches at the U. of South Carolina, presents examples and counterexamples to illustrate topics such as the structure of point sets, limits and continuity, differentiation, and orthogonal functions and Fourier series. The second edition includes a self-contained proof of Lebesgue's theorem and a new appendix on logic and proofs. Annotation copyrighted by Book News Inc., Portland, OR

Advanced Calculus (Revised Edition)

An authorised reissue of the long out of print classic textbook, Advanced Calculus by the late Dr Lynn Loomis and Dr Shlomo Sternberg both of Harvard University has been a revered but hard to find textbook for the advanced calculus course for decades. This book is based on an honors course in advanced calculus that the authors gave in the 1960's. The foundational material, presented in the unstarred sections of Chapters 1 through 11, was normally covered, but different applications of this basic material were stressed from year to year, and the book therefore contains more material than was covered in any one year. It can accordingly be used (with omissions) as a text for a year's course in a...

Problems in Real Analysis

Problems in Real Analysis: Advanced Calculus on the Real Axis features a comprehensive collection of challenging problems in mathematical analysis that aim to promote creative, non-standard techniques for solving problems. This self-contained text offers a host of new mathematical tools and strategies which develop a connection between analysis and other mathematical disciplines, such as physics and engineering. A broad view of mathematics is presented throughout; the text is excellent for the classroom or self-study. It is intended for undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics, as well as for researchers engaged in the interplay between applied analysis, mathematical physics, and numerical analysis.

Short Calculus

From the reviews "This is a reprint of the original edition of Lang’s ‘A First Course in Calculus’, which was first published in 1964....The treatment is ‘as rigorous as any mathematician would wish it’....[The exercises] are refreshingly simply stated, without any extraneous verbiage, and at times quite challenging....There are answers to all the exercises set and some supplementary problems on each topic to tax even the most able." --Mathematical Gazette

A Critique of Postcolonial Reason

Are the “culture wars” over? When did they begin? What is their relationship to gender struggle and the dynamics of class? In her first full treatment of postcolonial studies, a field that she helped define, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, one of the world’s foremost literary theorists, poses these questions from within the postcolonial enclave. “We cannot merely continue to act out the part of Caliban,” Spivak writes; and her book is an attempt to understand and describe a more responsible role for the postcolonial critic. A Critique of Postcolonial Reason tracks the figure of the “native informant” through various cultural practices—philosophy, history, literature—to suggest ...
