Lie Groups, Number Theory, and Vertex Algebras

This volume contains the proceedings of the conference Representation Theory XVI, held from June 25–29, 2019, in Dubrovnik, Croatia. The articles in the volume address selected aspects of representation theory of reductive Lie groups and vertex algebras, and are written by prominent experts in the field as well as junior researchers. The three main topics of these articles are Lie theory, number theory, and vertex algebras.

A Splendid Ride

Illustrated history of Kansas City's streetcar system, beginning with horse drawn cars in 1870. In the 1880s, Kansas City built the country's third-largest cable car system. By the turn of the century, cable and horse cars were rapidly replaced by electric streetcars. The streetcar network grew to more than 300 miles of track, not including interurban lines that stretched in six directions, some more than 40 miles. In the 1930s, competition from automobiles and growing expenses caused the operators to begin converting to buses. Streetcars enjoyed a brief resurgence during and just after World War II, but then were increasingly replaced by gasoline and then diesel buses. Kansas City's last streetcar ran on June 23, 1957.

The Lie Theory Workshop, founded by Joe Wolf (UC, Berkeley), has been running for over two decades. These workshops have been sponsored by the NSF, noting the talks have been seminal in describing new perspectives in the field covering broad areas of current research. At the beginning, the top universities in California and Utah hosted the meetings which continue to run on a quarterly basis. Experts in representation theory/Lie theory from various parts of the US, Europe, Asia (China, Japan, Singapore, Russia), Canada, and South and Central America were routinely invited to give talks at these meetings. Nowadays, the workshops are also hosted at universities in Louisiana, Virginia, and Oklah...

Singularities, Mirror Symmetry, and the Gauged Linear Sigma Model

This volume contains the proceedings of the workshop Crossing the Walls in Enumerative Geometry, held in May 2018 at Snowbird, Utah. It features a collection of both expository and research articles about mirror symmetry, quantized singularity theory (FJRW theory), and the gauged linear sigma model. Most of the expository works are based on introductory lecture series given at the workshop and provide an approachable introduction for graduate students to some fundamental topics in mirror symmetry and singularity theory, including quasimaps, localization, the gauged linear sigma model (GLSM), virtual classes, cosection localization, $p$-fields, and Saito's primitive forms. These articles help readers bridge the gap from the standard graduate curriculum in algebraic geometry to exciting cutting-edge research in the field. The volume also contains several research articles by leading researchers, showcasing new developments in the field.
