Gold Mining in Peru
In identifying patterns leading to conflict escalation and resolution, this research assists policymakers in the design of effective institutions that can channel conflict, gives international actors the understandings to best direct resources towards preventing violence, equips companies with tools to protect their investment by building mutual and durable community relations, and helps civil society in promoting forms of development that are commensurate with local needs and desires. More broadly, this dissertation presents an ethnography of subtle forms of violence, and explores how meaning-making practices render certain types of pain or damage noticeable while occluding others. By excavating how everyday interactions that underlie conflicts are strategically concealed in the short term, this study aims to assist in the prevention and transformation of violence over resource extraction.

Plan Colombia and the Mérida Initiative represented an unprecedented effort by Washington to stabilize fragile democracies in Latin America by shoring up the Colombian and Mexican security forces, respectively. Civil Resistance and Violent Conflict in Latin America
This book explores distinct forms of civil resistance in situations of violent conflict in cases across Latin America, drawing important lessons learned for nonviolent struggles in the region and beyond. The authors analyse campaigns against armed actors in situations of internal armed conflict, against private sector companies that seek to exploit natural resources, and against the state in defence of housing rights, to cite only some scenarios of violent conflict in which people in Latin America have organized to resist imposition by powerful actors and/or confront violence and oppression. Each of the nine cases studied looks at the violent context in which civil resistance took place, its modality, its results and the factors that influenced these, as well as the challenges faced, offering useful insights for scholars and practitioners alike.
